MORTUUS ET SEPULTUS (2020)

A ROMANCE WITH VIOLENCE (2020)
1. The Curtain Pulls Back 01:12   instrumental
2. The Crimson Rider (Gallows Frontier, Act I) 10:40
  Death! And no escape.
See, the Crimson Rider - alone in the silver screen expanse.
A teeming bedlam of dust and thunder follows in his wake.
With all the resolve of hell burning in his eyes, the bastard hero traverses the plains.
Saddled with avarice and cruelty he rides - the key to a nation fixed to his belt.

A hero? A man. A mouthful of blood.
Perennial, a loaded gun.

A law of the land cares not for lawless men.
A skyline of gravestones stands tall come the dawn

The frontier eternal, beholden to none.
The rider who would deal death, has drafted his own.

The sun drawing nearer, The rider pushed on.
In a fervor of gold, the outlaw becomes a God.

See our hero, realize too late:
He was blind to the gallows, yet tied his own rope.
As the platform falls from his feet, His last breath proclaims:
I am iron, I am death. I am the setting sun. I am the West.

They’ll sing his song - of an era gone

Hero hero, to which sunset will you ride?
When the bleeding clouds leave no horizon?
The gallows, no road back?
3. The Iron Horse (Gallows Frontier, Act II) 06:28
  Lo, and behold...
The reaper doth approach.

The iron-clad stallion - its pallid complexion concealed.
Forward on, steel legs run.
A new lord lays claim to the land.

From bastard god, to steam powered daemon.
The apostles follow in the cavalcade.
Reavers and raiders, hunters and harbingers
A path is struck - extinction begins

The iron-born hellion - its burning eyes survey the killing fields.
Permanence, and negation.
The veins of the Republic expand.

The company revels in their champion
On his back, the west will be won
An inferno, fed of enslavement and starvation
There is always more coal for the flames.

Silence becomes the nations that stood in the path.
The gallows engulf the settlements that follow its wrath.

The forgotten hands that struck down the ties are swallowed by the frontier.
Joining the peoples, pushed deep below
The new nation will learn the fear.

Violence begets fear and tragedy.
As the Iron horse sow, so shall it’s riders reap.

As iron goes
So pile the skulls
the Gallow frontier,
Will never forget
4. Fire & Gold 04:19
The engine grinds its song,
One lonesome drone
The arrow of slumber drawn -
He’ll sink below

One man alone
Is it a dream?
Dreams bought and sold

Now he’s out there, on his own
A man on fortune’s road
The plains are his alone
The hills erupt with gold

There is a flame,
It’s whispering his name.

One land below
Is it a dream?
Fire and gold.

He finds himself in a dance
A burning romance.
As the blaze swallows his hopes,
He’ll sink below.
5. Masquerade of the Gunslingers 10:01
   Decadent, nearly divine.
Their shadows dance like velvet moonlight.

In the mezzanine above they applaud
Transfixed by the dancers, silently awed
The sterling attraction - the ballet of the gun
Murder in cold blood, as art in motion

Masquerade! they rise and they fall.
A pirouette, in the cadence of song

One mask falls down, another appears.

It's not what they see.
It is what they believe
It is there, at the crux of their judgement,
That the fantasy becomes the desire

The tragic poem ends as it begun.
And the men in the masks in death will live on

Awash in gold and velvet, with wandering eyes
You feel it burning within you, you're paralyzed
Please take my hand, and step into the night

The great dionysian facade
Is held upon our backs

The callous belief in blood elegant
Perpetuating from fathers to sons.
Spiraling down the grand halls of the dream.
6. Intermission 02:01   instrumental
7. Vaudeville 10:17
I’ve seen me that traveling band, for that love they bled
I’ve seen me that rider, of crimson and lead

I’ve seen that iron horse, rolling the plains
Seen a man cross in it’s way, and never again.

Behold the great picture show, the immortal dance
Our heroes are all killers - and it’s gold they romance

I’ll be that masked man a glory to see.
I’ll kill me a hundred men, so you’ll remember me

All parts have been played on the stage,
The raucous, faux-elegant wake
The gunfighters dancing in circles
Seduced by the fear they create

Chaos in black and white!
Cheers erupt as another man falls
In each young man’s eye, a fire is lit
He too could be the most savage of all

I wait for the show to come back
Holding out, to see that magic once again
I wait, while the water comes down
Will I ever see the end?

I see them, nights - in my dreams.
The riders of crimson and lead.
They turn their rifles on me -
Please sing my song when I’m dead.

Where is the dream?
Where is the world that was promised?
Where is romance?
When did it give way to rape?

Who wears the masks?
Who do the gunslingers ride for?
Where is the dream?
Bleeding, discarded, thrown from the tracks.

Where is the dream??

THE GREATER ABSENCE (2020)

OV SHADOWS - INTERVIEW

1. Ov Shadows was born in 2016, was Ov shadows a response to the disappearance of the Waning band of which you were part? Why did you really decide to create Ov Shadows and why did you choose this name?

Yes,  we had all been members of Waning for a couple of years and felt that we had reached a point where we couldn't evolve the concept anymore and that the band had lost the dark essence in the music that we always strive for. We wanted to put our music in a more dark and extreme direction again and that's basically how the idea of Ov Shadows came up. The band name is inspired by Jungian psychology and the concept of ‘the shadow self’ - ‘the shadow aspect’ - which is reflected in our strive to explore and embrace the dark aspects that dwells within each and everyone of us.

2.How was the composition and recording process for this new album? How is your way of working in the studio? Can we say that this "I djävulens avbild" is the result of all the members of Ov Shadows having been focused one hundred percent on the band in recent times leaving aside other projects?

Basically, we always follow the same approach when it comes to creating music and recording. The writing process begins in AAs studio and he is the one who mainly composes the music and then brings the raw material to our rehearsals. But the final product is always a result of a creative collaboration within the band, with contributions from everyone. Some songs are more or less kept as they where in the initial stage, whereas others goes through several versions or changes before we are satisfied. Ov shadows have been the highest priority for everyone in the band during this period, we have all been fully focused on getting it done in the best possible way. There are some other projects around the band but nothing that is particularly active right now.

3. Your first work “The Darkness Between Stars (2018)” is a correct black metal album that made you known within the scene as a band, however this “I djävulens avbild (2020)” is a much more mature album It stands out above all for offering much more darkness. Are you satisfied with the final result of “I djävulens avbild”? Have you consciously evolved the sound between these two albums in search of your identity?

Yes, we are very pleased with how the album turned out. We feel that we have developed in the right direction both in terms of sound and composition. After the release of  “The Darkness Between Stars”,  we were pretty clear about which direction we wanted to take and what we wanted to improve. We wanted a more aggressive and intense approach with our music and also bring some more atmosphere to it. Basically, it is a constant search for an ultimate dark and cold feeling that we want to be the essence of our music.

4.Your black has a very marked component of density and darkness. What are your main musical influences when dealing with the composition of the music of Ov Shadows?

The musical inspiration is something that constantly varies and then of course there are many classic black metal albums that are always included as inspiration.

5.As for the lyrics, what topics do you discuss in them? Why do you consider these topics interesting to be treated? And why have you decided to write in Swedish and abandon English for this last job?

The lyrical theme have evolved from dealing with lucid dreams and the shadow self into demonology. The topic is chosen because it interests me (RA).As for the language I felt that I needed to change language from English to break old writing habits and on top of that I have always wanted to write an album in Swedish.

6.Who was in charge of the cover design for “I djävulens avbild”, what does it represent and how does it relate to the content of the album?

The cover and layout was made by our art designer Mr Snow Pulse and represents the anchoret from the song Anakoretes Gap/The Maw of the Anchoret.

7.The Swedish black scene had a capital importance in the development of the genre in the nineties, with leading bands such as Marduk, Bathory or Dark Fueneral among others, to face the beginning of the century in a somewhat more lethargic way. How would you describe Today the dry black scene of which you are a part? What new bands can you recommend from the Gothenburg area?

Today's black metal scene in Sweden is of course something completely different compared to the time you mention. There are some really good bands here, but on the whole the development of black metal has been taken over by many other countries such as France, Iceland and the US. But we do our best to look ahead and try to create something unique of our own. New black metal bands from Gothenburg? Wish we could drop some names but unfortunately it is almost a non-existent scene here, times have really changed since the 90's.

8. Do you have in mind at some point to bring the Ov Shadows proposal to the stage? If so, why haven't you done it yet? Is the time of your first concert near?

Absolutely! Our ambition has always been to play live but due to other commitments and events it has not yet been realized. We definitely consider ourselves to be a live band so when the opportunity comes Ov Shadows will be ready.

9. Your previous album “The Darkness Between Stars” was published by Black Market Metal Label, however for this new album “I djävulens avbild”, the edition is in charge of Hypnotic Dirge Records, how did you get the possibility of releasing your second album through this label? Are you satisfied with the work done by Hypnotic Dirge Records, in terms of editing and promotion?

We came in contact with each other thanks to AAs involvement in the band Obitus, who released the excellent album "Slaves of the Vast Machine" in 2015 on Hypnotic Dirge Records. We knew that the label stands for quality and dedication, which made the choice easy for us once they offered a record deal. We are very pleased with the collaboration with Hypnotic Dirge Records, everything have work out very well and we really appreciate all the work they have done/are doing for us.

10.How were your beginnings in music: first albums you bought, first concerts you attended? Why did you decide to be a musician and what is black metal for you?

Like many other young metal heads, we started listening to bands like Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, and so on. Then came a drive to constantly find music that was meaner and darker, which eventually led us into black metal.Hard to remember the first concert but we went to a lot of gigs in the Gothenburg area in the late 90s. There was a very lively metal scene in Gothenburg at that time and gigs were arranged in many different places. Today it is unfortunately very dead on that front, so of course you miss that period.Do not think that any of us in the band really planned to become a musician or at some point decided to become one, but it is something that has grown gradually over the years. Basically, we are big fans of the genre and have a great interest in dark art in various forms and that has led us to become musicians.

11.What album represents the essence of black metal for you? What albums have you bought lately?

It will be very difficult to choose an album as a representative of an entire genre, but of course there are some albums that we think manifests the essence in black metal;  Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse, and Deathspell Omega - Si Monvmentvm Reqvires, Circvmspice to name a few masterpieces. The record that is played most frequently right now, at least by some of us in the band, is Aklhys latest record Melinoë, where they once again managed to create an exquisite piece of art of the darkest kind.

12.What future plans do you have for Ov Shadows in terms of upcoming releases, reissues, concerts, etc?

Both “I Djävulens Avbild” and ”The Darkness Between Stars” will be released on vinyl during 2021, which we of course really are looking forward to. They will be released through Vendetta Records in Europe and Hypnotic Dirge Records in North America. We don´t have any release dates yet but hopefully it will come out in the beginning of 2021.  For you cassette lovers out there, we can also announce that "I Djävulens Avbild" will be released in this format in early 2021 with a newly written bonus track. The aim is also set to eventually release a third full-length, but it's a journey we've just begun and a lot of work remains.

13. Thank you very much for the time dedicated to Black Metal Spirit, if you want to add something for Ov Shadows fans this is the place. I hope the questions have been to your liking.

Thank you Black Metal Spirit for giving us this opportunity and thanks to everyone who supports us it means a lot!

DWARROWDELF - INTERVIEW

1. At what point did you decide to put Dwarrowdelf into operation? What does the name Dwarrowdelf refer to and why did you choose it? Have you always been clear that this would be a one-man project or is it open to the incorporation of new members?

I think I started Dwarrowdelf in 2017 when I wrote a few Summoning-esque songs that didn’t fit with my existing black metal band at the time.  The first few songs were about dwarves, so I named the project after one of the names for Moria in the books, and it’s all kind of continued from there.  I think it will always remain largely a one-man project in terms of the direction and songwriting, but I really enjoyed having a session drummer on this last album which I will seek to continue to do. And I always like having guests appear!

2. Its sound roughly is inspired by the work of Tolkien and the music of Summoning, elements much more present in its beginnings especially in the musical plane, but now with a third album released its sound begins to give symptoms of evolution, preserving the epic but being much more direct, How has the sound of Dwarrowdelf in this latest album evolved with respect to his previous “From Beneath the Fells”? How has he faced recording a new album with respect to the previous In what way have you modified the way you work and record the new songs?

I’m glad you think the style has evolved!  That was definitely the intention with this album; the first two albums were very much in the Summoning mould, but I wanted to branch out and incorporate a lot of other genres that I enjoy and listen to as well.  At the end of the day, the goal with Dwarrowdelf is always to create epic songs, regardless of the specific genre influences, so I’ve never felt too constrained by having to fit a particular sound.

3. In your new work we can intuit styles that until now had not had so much prominence in your music such as something from the most classic black, death or even heavy, is the sound of "Evenstar" aware of the presence of these influences ? How would you define the sound of Evenstar "for those who have not heard it yet?

I’d say that Evenstar is an album for anyone who enjoys epic music.  The influences ranged from melodeath like Insomnium and Wintersun, to viking-era Bathory, to atmospheric black metal like Sojourner.  Those genres you mention were definitely the genres I was listening to most when I wrote and recorded these songs, and I think it comes through a lot. I think on the most part, people have been really positive about how I’ve blended these genres together, which is very satisfying!

4. What brands of instruments have you used for the recording of your new album “Evenstar?” How was the writing and recording process at Hair Force House Studios? And why did you decide to do the mastering at the Onieros Studio by Mike Lamb?

I used my new 7-string Schecter Omen Extreme-7 for this album for the first time, which gave me more scope to incorporate some proper low notes into the riffing. I’m really happy with the guitar work this time around.  I decided to mix the album again this time from my home studio, which was a welcome experience given that I was in lockdown at the time! Gave me something to do haha.  Mike Lamb mixed and mastered the previous Dwarrowdelf album (Of Dying Lights), so I thought it would be good to get him to master this album to keep it continuous with the previous album. He did a great job, and he offered loads of helpful tips through the rest of the process too!

5. With a theme centered on Tolkien's work, the truth is that the topics to be discussed seem almost infinite thanks to the vast world created by him and with topics already covered by you related to orcs and dwarves, now comes the men's turn hand in hand with a conceptual story. Why do you choose Tolkien's work for your lyrics? And what can you tell us about the conceptual history of the album?

The Tolkien theme has definitely been done a lot!  But as you say, there’s so much content in his world that I don’t see Tolkien metal stopping anytime soon.  With this album, I thought that the story of Aragorn and Arwen would make a good concept, especially as it’s a bit different to other albums out there.  I feel that their love story is the central driving force behind Aragorn, so it’s an important tale to tell. Throughout the album he faces adversity and loses self-belief for a time, but eventually rises above all challenges to claim the throne of Gondor and his love. It’s the sort of story that this kind of epic music is suited for; I don’t think it would work on a raw black metal album haha.

6. For this album he has had a session drummer and collaboration on some songs in the form of guitar solos with other musicians; How did the possibility of making these collaborations arise? And what do you think they have contributed to the final result of the album?

Northern Silence suggested that a session drummer might help add some depth to the album, considering the different approach, so I got in touch with Joe from Beorn’s Hall and he absolutely smashed it!  The guitar solo was done by Jeremy from Beorn’s Hall too, as the song really called for a solo in the style of their latest album; it’s great to have both of those guys on the album.  We’ve all been fans of each other’s work for a while and appeared on the same Bathory compilation with Fólkvangr Records, so it’s awesome to finally all get together on one song!

7. Who was in charge of the album cover design? How is the cover related to the album content? Why did you choose the name “Evenstar” to title the album?

The artwork was once again done by Jordan Grimmer; he’s done the art for all three proper full lengths now, so it was a no brainer to pitch him the concept and see what he came up with. The image is a portrayal of Aragorn pledging himself to Arwen under a mighty tree in Lothlorien, which to me was the best image to represent the core theme of the story. As ever, Jordan did an amazing job, and it’s probably my favourite Dwarrowdelf artwork to date.

8. For the edition of “Evenstar” you have chosen the German label Northern Silence Productions, why this choice to make the edition of the new album with them? Are you satisfied with the editing and promotion work carried out by the label?

Northern Silence are a legendary label, and it’s an honour to be on a roster with some of my favourite current artists - the 2020 releases from Ruadh, Skyforest, Forlorn Citadel, Belore and Malist were all among my favourites last year, so it’s a great label to be involved with!  The album has reached a lot more ears than previous releases and that’s definitely due in part to their efforts promoting the record, so I’m very thankful and looking forward to working with them going forward. Torsten is really passionate about the underground scene, so every release is treated with care and attention!

9. In a situation like the current one due to Covid-19, in what way do you think it has affected you in terms of sales and promotion of the album? In what way have you maintained interest and contact with your fans? Maybe planning some kind of reissue of the album to satisfy Dwarrowdelf fans?

I think there’s been a lot more music released this year, especially in underground circles, but luckily everyone’s been at home and so has had more time to listen to new music!  So in a way, it’s been a great time to release an album.  As mentioned above, the numbers are really good so I’m happy in that aspect.  With regard to reissues of this and previous albums… there might be some big news coming soon!  Keep an eye out...

10. Beorn's Hall, Ovnev (which have recently been reviewed on the blog), Winterfylleth, Summoning are bands that in one way or another have been related by style or theme with Dwarrowdelf, right now for you which is more important and influential, the epic and Tolkien theme of one band like Summoning or the atmospheric charge of the others?

Good question! Personally, when I listen to music, I normally pay attention to the music over the lyrics.  Bands like Caladan Brood and Sojourner prove you don’t need to write about Tolkien to write sweeping, epic pieces of atmospheric music. I think as long as the music creates that sense of immersion, it can be lyrically about anything.

11. How were your beginnings in music: first concerts you attended, first CDs you bought? Why did you decide to dedicate yourself to being a musician? Which of Tolkien's works do you feel most related to: The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings?

My first concert was seeing Status Quo with my mum years ago… a great band, but not very metal!  I started playing music properly at university, and swiftly discovered that black metal and its associated genres were where I’m most comfortable, although genres like heavy metal and power metal are also great to play live just because of how fun they are. Enjoyment is definitely the main reason I do this; I’m not kidding myself that I’ll ever make this into a viable main job!  And I’d say the Lord of the Rings books - I don’t read them that often, but they have something about them that always rekindles the fire I first felt when discovering Tolkien’s world.

12. Which album of represents to you the essence of epic black metal? What last albums have you acquired?

Caladan Brood’s Echoes of Battle is the perfect epic black metal album in my view. I recently finally got a copy on CD, which was long overdue. Other important epic black albums to me would be Summoning’s Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame, Eldamar’s The Force of the Ancient Land, Emyn Muil’s Túrin Turambar Dagnir Glaurunga

13. What future plans do you have for Dwarrowdelf right now in terms of reissues, new tracks, etc?

As mentioned above, there are some plans in the works to be revealed soon regarding reissues. I think a lot of people are going to be very happy when the announcement is made, it’s about a format that I’ve received a lot of questions on over the years.

14. Thank you very much for the time dedicated to Black Metal Spirit, if you want to add something for Dwarrowdelf fans this is the place. I hope the questions have been to your liking.

Thanks again for the questions and interest in the project, it’s really appreciated.  And thanks to everyone who’s listened to, bought or enjoyed Evenstar!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
