1. At what point did you decide to put Dwarrowdelf into operation? What does the name Dwarrowdelf refer to and why did you choose it? Have you always been clear that this would be a one-man project or is it open to the incorporation of new members?
I think I started Dwarrowdelf in 2017 when I wrote a few Summoning-esque songs that didn’t fit with my existing black metal band at the time. The first few songs were about dwarves, so I named the project after one of the names for Moria in the books, and it’s all kind of continued from there. I think it will always remain largely a one-man project in terms of the direction and songwriting, but I really enjoyed having a session drummer on this last album which I will seek to continue to do. And I always like having guests appear!
2. Its sound roughly is inspired by the work of Tolkien and the music of Summoning, elements much more present in its beginnings especially in the musical plane, but now with a third album released its sound begins to give symptoms of evolution, preserving the epic but being much more direct, How has the sound of Dwarrowdelf in this latest album evolved with respect to his previous “From Beneath the Fells”? How has he faced recording a new album with respect to the previous In what way have you modified the way you work and record the new songs?
I’m glad you think the style has evolved! That was definitely the intention with this album; the first two albums were very much in the Summoning mould, but I wanted to branch out and incorporate a lot of other genres that I enjoy and listen to as well. At the end of the day, the goal with Dwarrowdelf is always to create epic songs, regardless of the specific genre influences, so I’ve never felt too constrained by having to fit a particular sound.
3. In your new work we can intuit styles that until now had not had so much prominence in your music such as something from the most classic black, death or even heavy, is the sound of "Evenstar" aware of the presence of these influences ? How would you define the sound of Evenstar "for those who have not heard it yet?
I’d say that Evenstar is an album for anyone who enjoys epic music. The influences ranged from melodeath like Insomnium and Wintersun, to viking-era Bathory, to atmospheric black metal like Sojourner. Those genres you mention were definitely the genres I was listening to most when I wrote and recorded these songs, and I think it comes through a lot. I think on the most part, people have been really positive about how I’ve blended these genres together, which is very satisfying!
4. What brands of instruments have you used for the recording of your new album “Evenstar?” How was the writing and recording process at Hair Force House Studios? And why did you decide to do the mastering at the Onieros Studio by Mike Lamb?
I used my new 7-string Schecter Omen Extreme-7 for this album for the first time, which gave me more scope to incorporate some proper low notes into the riffing. I’m really happy with the guitar work this time around. I decided to mix the album again this time from my home studio, which was a welcome experience given that I was in lockdown at the time! Gave me something to do haha. Mike Lamb mixed and mastered the previous Dwarrowdelf album (Of Dying Lights), so I thought it would be good to get him to master this album to keep it continuous with the previous album. He did a great job, and he offered loads of helpful tips through the rest of the process too!
5. With a theme centered on Tolkien's work, the truth is that the topics to be discussed seem almost infinite thanks to the vast world created by him and with topics already covered by you related to orcs and dwarves, now comes the men's turn hand in hand with a conceptual story. Why do you choose Tolkien's work for your lyrics? And what can you tell us about the conceptual history of the album?
The Tolkien theme has definitely been done a lot! But as you say, there’s so much content in his world that I don’t see Tolkien metal stopping anytime soon. With this album, I thought that the story of Aragorn and Arwen would make a good concept, especially as it’s a bit different to other albums out there. I feel that their love story is the central driving force behind Aragorn, so it’s an important tale to tell. Throughout the album he faces adversity and loses self-belief for a time, but eventually rises above all challenges to claim the throne of Gondor and his love. It’s the sort of story that this kind of epic music is suited for; I don’t think it would work on a raw black metal album haha.
6. For this album he has had a session drummer and collaboration on some songs in the form of guitar solos with other musicians; How did the possibility of making these collaborations arise? And what do you think they have contributed to the final result of the album?
Northern Silence suggested that a session drummer might help add some depth to the album, considering the different approach, so I got in touch with Joe from Beorn’s Hall and he absolutely smashed it! The guitar solo was done by Jeremy from Beorn’s Hall too, as the song really called for a solo in the style of their latest album; it’s great to have both of those guys on the album. We’ve all been fans of each other’s work for a while and appeared on the same Bathory compilation with Fólkvangr Records, so it’s awesome to finally all get together on one song!
7. Who was in charge of the album cover design? How is the cover related to the album content? Why did you choose the name “Evenstar” to title the album?
The artwork was once again done by Jordan Grimmer; he’s done the art for all three proper full lengths now, so it was a no brainer to pitch him the concept and see what he came up with. The image is a portrayal of Aragorn pledging himself to Arwen under a mighty tree in Lothlorien, which to me was the best image to represent the core theme of the story. As ever, Jordan did an amazing job, and it’s probably my favourite Dwarrowdelf artwork to date.
8. For the edition of “Evenstar” you have chosen the German label Northern Silence Productions, why this choice to make the edition of the new album with them? Are you satisfied with the editing and promotion work carried out by the label?
Northern Silence are a legendary label, and it’s an honour to be on a roster with some of my favourite current artists - the 2020 releases from Ruadh, Skyforest, Forlorn Citadel, Belore and Malist were all among my favourites last year, so it’s a great label to be involved with! The album has reached a lot more ears than previous releases and that’s definitely due in part to their efforts promoting the record, so I’m very thankful and looking forward to working with them going forward. Torsten is really passionate about the underground scene, so every release is treated with care and attention!
9. In a situation like the current one due to Covid-19, in what way do you think it has affected you in terms of sales and promotion of the album? In what way have you maintained interest and contact with your fans? Maybe planning some kind of reissue of the album to satisfy Dwarrowdelf fans?
I think there’s been a lot more music released this year, especially in underground circles, but luckily everyone’s been at home and so has had more time to listen to new music! So in a way, it’s been a great time to release an album. As mentioned above, the numbers are really good so I’m happy in that aspect. With regard to reissues of this and previous albums… there might be some big news coming soon! Keep an eye out...
10. Beorn's Hall, Ovnev (which have recently been reviewed on the blog), Winterfylleth, Summoning are bands that in one way or another have been related by style or theme with Dwarrowdelf, right now for you which is more important and influential, the epic and Tolkien theme of one band like Summoning or the atmospheric charge of the others?
Good question! Personally, when I listen to music, I normally pay attention to the music over the lyrics. Bands like Caladan Brood and Sojourner prove you don’t need to write about Tolkien to write sweeping, epic pieces of atmospheric music. I think as long as the music creates that sense of immersion, it can be lyrically about anything.
11. How were your beginnings in music: first concerts you attended, first CDs you bought? Why did you decide to dedicate yourself to being a musician? Which of Tolkien's works do you feel most related to: The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings?
My first concert was seeing Status Quo with my mum years ago… a great band, but not very metal! I started playing music properly at university, and swiftly discovered that black metal and its associated genres were where I’m most comfortable, although genres like heavy metal and power metal are also great to play live just because of how fun they are. Enjoyment is definitely the main reason I do this; I’m not kidding myself that I’ll ever make this into a viable main job! And I’d say the Lord of the Rings books - I don’t read them that often, but they have something about them that always rekindles the fire I first felt when discovering Tolkien’s world.
12. Which album of represents to you the essence of epic black metal? What last albums have you acquired?
Caladan Brood’s Echoes of Battle is the perfect epic black metal album in my view. I recently finally got a copy on CD, which was long overdue. Other important epic black albums to me would be Summoning’s Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame, Eldamar’s The Force of the Ancient Land, Emyn Muil’s Túrin Turambar Dagnir Glaurunga
13. What future plans do you have for Dwarrowdelf right now in terms of reissues, new tracks, etc?
As mentioned above, there are some plans in the works to be revealed soon regarding reissues. I think a lot of people are going to be very happy when the announcement is made, it’s about a format that I’ve received a lot of questions on over the years.

1. ¿En que momento decide poner en funcionamiento Dwarrowdelf?¿A que hace referencia el nombre de Dwarrowdelf y por que lo elige?¿Siempre tuvo claro que este sería un proyecto de una sola persona o esta abierto a la incorporación de nuevos miembros?
Creo que comencé Dwarrowdelf en 2017 cuando escribí algunas canciones al estilo de Summoning que no encajaban con mi banda de black metal existente en ese momento. Las primeras canciones eran sobre enanos, así que nombré al proyecto por uno de los nombres de Moria en los libros, y todo continuó a partir de ahí. Creo que siempre seguirá siendo en gran parte un proyecto de un solo hombre en términos de dirección y composición, pero realmente disfruté tener un baterista de sesión en este último álbum que intentaré seguir haciendo. ¡Y siempre me gusta que aparezcan invitados!

Su sonido a groso modo esta inspirado por la obra de Tolkien y por la música de Summoning, elementos mucho más presentes en sus inicios sobre todo en el plano musical, pero ahora ya con un tercer álbum editado su sonido comienza a dar síntomas de evolución, conservando la épica pero siendo mucho más directo, ¿Cómo ha evolucionando el sonido de Dwarrowdelf en este último trabajo con respecto a su anterior “From Beneath the Fells”?¿Cómo ha afrontado la grabación de nuevo álbum con respecto a los anteriores y de que manera a modificado manera de trabajar y grabar los nuevos temas?
¡Me alegra que pienses que el estilo ha evolucionado! Esa fue definitivamente la intención con este álbum; los primeros dos álbumes estaban muy en el molde de Summoning, pero quería diversificarme e incorporar muchos otros géneros que disfruto y escucho también. Al final del día, el objetivo con Dwarrowdelf es siempre crear canciones épicas, independientemente de las influencias específicas del género, por lo que nunca me he sentido demasiado limitado por tener que ajustar un sonido en particular.
3. En su nuevo trabajo podemos intuir estilos que hasta ahora no habían tenido tanto protagonismo en su música como pueden ser algo del black más clásico el death o incluso el heavy, ¿es consciente de la presencia de estas influencias el sonido de “Evenstar”?¿Cómo definiría el sonido de Evenstar” para quien todavía no lo haya escuchado?
Yo diría que Evenstar es un álbum para cualquiera que disfrute de la música épica. Las influencias iban desde melodeath como Insomnium y Wintersun, hasta Bathory de la era vikinga, hasta el atmosférico black metal como Sojourner. Esos géneros que mencionas fueron definitivamente los géneros que más escuchaba cuando escribí y grabé estas canciones, y creo que se transmiten mucho. Creo que, en su mayor parte, la gente ha sido muy positiva acerca de cómo he combinado estos géneros, ¡lo cual es muy satisfactorio!
4. ¿Qué marcas de instrumentos ha usado para la grabación de su nuevo álbum “Evenstar”?¿Cómo fue el proceso de composición y grabación en los Hair Force House Studios? Y ¿por qué decidió realizar el masterizado en los Onieros Studio a cargo de Mike Lamb?
Usé mi nuevo Schecter Omen Extreme-7 de 7 cuerdas para este álbum por primera vez, lo que me dio más posibilidades de incorporar algunas notas bajas adecuadas en el riffing. Estoy realmente feliz con el trabajo de la guitarra esta vez. Decidí mezclar el álbum nuevamente esta vez desde el estudio de mi casa, lo cual fue una experiencia bienvenida dado que estaba encerrado en ese momento. Me dio algo que hacer jaja. Mike Lamb mezcló y masterizó el álbum anterior de Dwarrowdelf (Of Dying Lights), así que pensé que sería bueno lograr que dominara este álbum para mantenerlo continuo con el álbum anterior. Hizo un gran trabajo y también ofreció muchos consejos útiles durante el resto del proceso.

¡El tema de Tolkien definitivamente se ha hecho mucho! Pero como dices, hay tanto contenido en su mundo que no veo que el metal de Tolkien se detenga pronto. Con este álbum, pensé que la historia de Aragorn y Arwen sería un buen concepto, especialmente porque es un poco diferente a otros álbumes que existen. Siento que su historia de amor es la fuerza impulsora central detrás de Aragorn, por lo que es una historia importante que contar. A lo largo del álbum se enfrenta a la adversidad y pierde la confianza en sí mismo por un tiempo, pero finalmente supera todos los desafíos para reclamar el trono de Gondor y su amor. Es el tipo de historia para la que es adecuada este tipo de música épica; No creo que funcione en un álbum de black metal crudo, jaja.

El álbum ha llegado a muchos más oídos que los lanzamientos anteriores y eso definitivamente se debe en parte a sus esfuerzos por promover el disco, así que estoy muy agradecido y espero trabajar con ellos en el futuro. Torsten es un apasionado de la escena underground, ¡así que cada lanzamiento se trata con cuidado y atención!

Creo que se ha lanzado mucha más música este año, especialmente en los círculos clandestinos, pero afortunadamente todos han estado en casa y por eso han tenido más tiempo para escuchar música nueva. Así que, en cierto modo, ha sido un gran momento para lanzar un álbum. Como se mencionó anteriormente, los números son realmente buenos, así que estoy contento en ese aspecto. Con respecto a las reediciones de este y álbumes anteriores… ¡puede haber grandes noticias pronto! Estar atento...
10. ¡Buena pregunta! Personalmente, cuando escucho música, normalmente presto atención a la música sobre las letras. Bandas como Caladan Brood y Sojourner demuestran que no es necesario escribir sobre Tolkien para escribir piezas épicas y radicales de música atmosférica. Creo que mientras la música cree esa sensación de inmersión, puede tratarse líricamente de cualquier cosa.
11. ¿Cómo fueron sus inicios en la música: primero conciertos a los que asistió, primeros cds que compró?¿Por que decidió dedicarse a ser músico?¿Con que obra de Tolkien se siente más relacionado: El Hobbit o El señor de los Anillos?
Mi primer concierto fue viendo Status Quo con mi mamá hace años… una gran banda, ¡pero no muy metal! Comencé a tocar música correctamente en la universidad y rápidamente descubrí que el black metal y sus géneros asociados eran donde me sentía más cómodo, aunque géneros como el heavy metal y el power metal también son geniales para tocar en vivo solo por lo divertidos que son. El disfrute es definitivamente la razón principal por la que hago esto; ¡No me estoy engañando a mí mismo al pensar que alguna vez convertiré esto en un trabajo principal viable! Y yo diría los libros de El señor de los anillos; no los leo con tanta frecuencia, pero tienen algo sobre ellos que siempre reaviva el fuego que sentí por primera vez al descubrir el mundo de Tolkien.
12. ¿Qué álbum de representa para usted la esencia del black metal épico?¿Qué último álbumes ha adquirido?
Echoes of Battle de Caladan Brood es el álbum de black metal épico perfecto en mi opinión. Recientemente, finalmente obtuve una copia en CD, que estaba muy atrasada. Otros álbumes negros épicos importantes para mí serían Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame de Summoning, The Force of the Ancient Land de Eldamar, Túrin Turambar Dagnir Glaurunga de Emyn Muil
13. ¿Qué planes de futuro tiene ahora mismo para Dwarrowdelf en cuanto a reediciones, nuevos temas, etc?
Como se mencionó anteriormente, hay algunos planes en proceso que se revelarán pronto con respecto a las reediciones. Creo que mucha gente estará muy feliz cuando se haga el anuncio, se trata de un formato sobre el que he recibido muchas preguntas a lo largo de los años.
