THE PROMISE OF RAIN (2024)
1. In the Basin of Alkaline Grief 06:02
Weightless in the arid wind
I plummet, wild and livid
Towards your sere terrain
Cruel and perfect
It burns, unconquered
Scarred and crenelated
Where the waters went extinct
Echoes from epochs of violence
That left its bones flayed
And though I am afraid
I rush towards your embrace
Here, in the basin of alkaline grief
Loom the wounds in your soul, arrayed
Beneath the heavens’ desiccant gaze
I will make this waste our home
Beloved, you will never be alone
2. Scorched Vision 11:25
Rigors and strictures
In the house of devotion
To trespass with care and grace
To conserve strength
To consume salt, to shed dead weight
Below a baleful sky, to seek my place
I cast out for the parched ways
I become what you need me to be
Kneeling seared in the sand
In blistered tones, I plead
For the ghost of this fleshless land
To alight in the shattered trees
I am touched by exhaustion’s hand
Sweat-beads bejewel my face
I abjure the strength to stand
And persist in attitudes of faith
Drained in delirium’s canyon
In awe of the mystery
Vision, reveal yourself to me
In the red
My wretched crest
Unwinds, cracks open
Ashen, gasping
The distal blade of hemotoxin
Cleaves the horizon
Cleansed by dust, at last I see
That tender flower
Scorched but lovely
In mourning, secure
From forgotten enemies
In this abyss of rock and sun
In this erased inland sea
3. Subduction 03:44
Slow time still flows
By night
The patient stars align
Their sigils constant, their patterns known
They draw ripples ‘cross the stone
Fifty million years wide
A molten tide
Hills rise up, hills erode
I see your face made strange
Pain accrued in substrate waves
That on your brow broke
Like subduction; like undertow
Your world quakes, your world erodes
And as the dawn breaks
In shadow I wait
For your shape to be exposed
4. Undertow 04:05
5. Venom & Cadmium 07:27
The mesa dreams its grueling dream
Caustic and fragile
And poisons paint its sleeping streams
Venom and cadmium
What souls would roam your suffering slopes
Shall stand transformed; their other course
Is strewn with spines, cords bleached and tanned
By brilliance, beast, or ferrous storm
My worn pride bruised the dust before
My stricken weight, my burden spilled
And picked apart by omnivores
Who slithered forth in armored plate
From dens that pierce your scarp-swelled silt
Your cursеd earth collects its tithe
In fеvers ‘tween the anticlines
Where fools presumed to understand
What waits for them in this drained land
6. The Promise of Rain 07:26
Should I die among your sage
My essence shall burst free and drain
Through roots of those same droughted plants
Who clasp your past; they understand
That I once knew you, light and shade,
And fell in peace like promised rain
But should I live, let me remain
O draw me near; in pools I’ll stand
And from your heat, draw shining strength
While nestled in your sandstone hands
Where we may watch your seasons rage
And, graceless, dance along your strands
For I, too, am marred and strange
By sun and wind and stars deplored
A vagrant flood, a moth to flame,
Adoring your unearthly forms
So wrap me in your fierce embrace
And by our joining faults abide
Forgive me what mistakes I’ve made
And sing to me through vanished tides
For quick or still, I shall hold true
And ‘til, in time, my torrent breaks,
Will judge your madness beautiful
And linger by your slender sage
