ATONEMENT - INTERVIEW

Good evening, thank you very much for answering these questions, how is everything going in Stockholm?

It’s fine, pretty shit weather currently so had the time to answer this now!

Cheers!

1.The band was born around the year 2020, what pushed you to create the band? Why did you choose the name Atonement and what does it refer to?

We had known eatchother before and we therefore knew that we shared the same flame for early putrid death/thrash metal. Atonement sounded like a solid and straight forward name for a thrashing death metal band. It refers very good to the genre itself, it sums up the general style and what we like.

2. In 2021 you released your first demo, a demo that on the other hand you were not completely satisfied with the result achieved, how was the composition and recording process of this first release?

Not too complicated actually. The band spawned december 2020 and we wanted to have the demo out as early as possible... in other hand, we were retarded rushing everything.

I think it would be better to take the time but well, here we are and we are satisfied so far.

3. You will shortly release your first full-length “Sadistic Invaders”, which will contain new songs but also those from the demo, with a facelift, were you so dissatisfied with the result of the demo to record them again to include them? on the new album? How did you approach the process of composition and recording of the new album to get away from what was exposed in the demo? What brands of instruments have you used for the process of composition and recording?

The writing process has been the same but the diffrence is that we took more time to think about everything. The demo songs are a bit reworked but they’re still the same shit.

We play the most standard things possible, marshall, spector, tokai etc.

We aren’t that proffesional gear wise.

4. Your black has a primitive sound, merging with styles like thrash or rock, however as a differentiating element I would like to highlight the classic death sound that is also present in your sound, what bands and styles are an influence on you over the years? time to shape your sound? How would you describe the sound of the album for those who haven't heard it yet?

Atonement overall is presented in a very “necro” or “diy” way considering we are doing this in 2023. This is what we like and the music itself is total deathrashing carnage!!!!

Some bands we would like to thank is Sarcofago, merciless and morbid.

5. Your lyrics are related to styles such as black, in the parts more related to the devil, as well as death in the parts focused on the murders, who is in charge of the composition of the lyrics and where do you find inspiration for it? Do the lyrics fit the music or vice versa?

Mille does the lyrics, he started with it and it sounded great so he’s the main writer lyric wise. The general topics and mysterious things and ancient historic happenings...

6. For the production and mixing of the demo you have counted on Gustaf Magnusson, who has taken care of this section for the new album? Do you feel that you have found the right person on this occasion?

Gustaf produced the demo and we would really like to thank him for taking his time doing it!

Altough, the album is produced and recorded with tomas skogsberg at the mighty sunlight studios. I think i dont have to introduce them. We were very lucky getting contact with him and he did a really fuckingn great job doing this album. Big hails to Tomas!

7. If I'm not mistaken, when you released your first demo you were around sixteen years old, in the end it will be true that the Nordic countries bring metal to schools, was it very hard to make your way into the world of black metal from such an early age How did you manage to combine your studies with the career of the band?

It can be busy sometimes but you have to prioritize, i haven’t felt that much pressure between those two things.

8. Who did the design of the cover of “Sadistic Invaders”, what does it represent and how does it relate to the content of the album?

Nino andaresta did it, he has also done covers for Nocturnal (great band also).

The album cover brings the total mayhem of the album!!!!

Face the sadistic invader

9. You have not given up being able to offer a concert since your beginnings, will this continue to be the case with the new album? Do you already have some dates closed? Who would you like to share a small mini-tour with?

We havn’t thought about playing live that much. Only some small well organized once.

We would like to join Ultra Silvam on tour or Gallower from Poland, great bands that bring a great sound to the daily scene.

10. The new album will be released by Dying Victims Productions, why did you decide to change the record label for the release of this new album? Maybe an edition in a format like cassette would suit a style like yours wonderfully?

We had some struggle with Regain/shadow records so we choose to leave them and join the mighty DYING VICTIMS!

Big ups to florian grill.

a cassette version would be cool, tell dying victims to do one haha!

11. How were your beginnings in music: first concerts you attended, first albums you bought? What event in your lives pushed you to want to be musicians?

My introduction to this religion was my dad showing me early Helloween. I looked them up and also found Ride the Lightning by Metallica.

That was pretty life changing haha.

12. What album represents for you the essence of black metal? What last albums have you bought?

Mayhem - Deathcrush brings a good necro sound...

The primitive songwriting + vox of Hellhammer...

The violent tone of Tormentor...

That’s it.

13. Thank you very much for taking the time to answer these questions for Black Metal Spirit, if you want to add something for Atonement fans this is the place. I hope the questions are to your liking.

Thank you for this interview!

Thanks!
