MØRKET - INTERVIEW

1. Severi, Lauri and Samuli decided to create the band a few years, why they decided to create Mørket ?, referred Mørket name?
-Seve: The main reason for me to set up the band was the need to play music more aggressively and louder than ever before and then I crashed to the Samuli who has strongly same visions. I knew Samuli from some metal project we played in a few years ago, but that group never had even name.. It was more like jamming riffs etc. With Lauri we have had some progressive rock/punk projects, but never anything so dark like Mørket. Me and Lauri always talked to set up some hardcore punk band, because we listened same bands like Converge, Abduktio, Every Time I die, Cancer Bats, Mastodon, Kvelertak etc. So I called Lauri to come jamming our first song ever made  “Kylväjä” which I and Samuli made on our first rehearsals. Lauri liked and the base of Mørket was nailed. Then we realized that we need a vocalist and bassist and when the Otto and Janne was found the red line of the our music was ready.
The name Mørket means “in the darkness” in Danish.  The word is punchy because it is short and its sounds so damn gooooood. :)
-Otto: Seve pretty much just nailed everything there is to it!

2. Last year you editáis your first album "Musta luonto" un album full of different styles and influences very visceral sound. How did you manage to come composing the songs and work in the studio?
-Otto: I guess when the main frame of a song is taken to the rehearsals, it just goes through a process of molding and twisting and toying with different ideas and figurations and thus a nuance-rich song is born. As a recording band we lean strongly to record (almost) everything live to capture the essence and feel of rawness.
-Seve: We all like several genres so we are not stucked in to one genre..and thats why we have the album full of several nuances.

3. The album's sound is a mixture of styles, but mostly we find punk, hardcore and black metal, but you will feel more comfortable with punk influences than the black, what is more preferably should by punk sounds?
-Otto: I concur with Seve.
-Seve: Yeah, I prefer that we sound punk and maybe more like crust punk with punch of dark madness.

4. Mastodon would Kvelertak or two recognizable bands in your sound, what are your main musical influences?
-Otto: There’s way too many to name, but as all of us bring our own preferences to the game, Mørket evolves accordingly. I guess I could name The Secret, Cult of Luna, Martyrdöd, Baptists, Oathbreaker, Black breath and Hierophant as my personal influences, just to name a few of the “angrier” ones. There’s plenty to draw inspiration from, not just punk/metal.
-Seve: Ough, there are so many of them...and we all surely have different of them but here are few of my longtime influences for Mørket nowadays: Converge, Deafheaven, Oathbreaker, YAITW, Every Time I Die etc.

5. Have you taken your mother tongue, Finnish, to write letters, why do optasteis by Finnish? What subject comprises the lyrics of your songs? And why write about it?
-Otto: As a lyricist, I haven’t really done much in my native tongue, so I thought it would be neat to give it a go. And in finnish it’s kind of “easier” to be bluntly agitative, hehe. The subjects of the lyrics comprise of - but not limited to - poverty, greed, hypocrisy, religious fundamentalism, capitalistic subjugation and nihilistic worldviews.
-Seve: For me the Finnish was natural choice.

6. I suppose a place where your music takes on a new dimension in the concerts, especially the attitude and visceral proposal, how intense it is a concert mørket? Who would you like to share the stage?
-Seve: Of course it’s as intense as possible and I think it’s getting more intense and aggressive gig by gig.
If we could share the stage example some of the bands named above, we would be blessed...of course by satan. :)
-Otto: As a live act we aim to be a rabid whirlpool of noise, aggression and ominous dynamics, hehe. I’d like to share the stage with any band that delivers by passion and are not cunts.

7. How were your beginnings in music: first records, first concerts Why choose to become a musician?
-Seve: Well, I have played guitar in different bands and projects like whole my life since I got my first electric guitar. Music has always been a natural way to express myself of course in good and bad.
My first gig ever as an adult was in the helsinki finland in legendary Factory bar but I cant really remember much.. maybe I was tryin’ to damp down my exitement with beer :)
-Otto: I’ve been keen to do music of some kind as long as I can remember. At first I played bass and guitar (sucked at both) then a little bit of drums (sucked at that too) and when all my other friends were getting better at playing their instruments, I took up the vocal duties (suck at that too) and now I’m mostly doing just that. My first record was Sgt. Pepper’s lonely hearts club band by The Beatles and my first gig worth mentioning was some vague punk gig at some home party.

8. Why do you believe that in the Nordic countries, in this case Finladia, so many good metal bands come from?
-Otto: The long dark winter, I guess? Melancholic and suicidal traits of the Finnish mentality maybe? I really don’t know, haha!

9. You have just signed with KHY Suomen Musiikki Oy, how contact with the seal occurs? What can you tell us about Kari Hynninen?
-Seve: That’s been awesome and easy. Kari is like mentor to us who have all good connections and wide experience from music business.

10. One thing is that you are working on your next; What can you advance us about it?
-Otto: Now that our debut is coming out properly through our label Suomen Musiikki with two extra songs, I think we’ll just do a whole lot of gigs and start laying the groundwork for our next LP.

11. What are your plans for Mørket in 2016?
-Seve: To play as much and loud as we can. In the end of the year we start planning THE second Mørket album. Of course we can’t wait to get our release in our hands in this spring.
-Otto: Seve summed it all up! We keep pushing forward, onward and deeper into the pits of despair.

12. Thank you very much for taking the time to Black Metal Spirit, if you want to add something for the followers of Mørket, this is the place. I hope the questions are to your liking.
-Seve: Best way to follow us is to go Facebook and like our page.
-Otto: If you find our art interesting, bying our LP is always a nice way to appreciate it! It has posters and cool visuals and all other neat stuff. But nevertheless, if you like our music, we’re humbly grateful.

DEUS EST MORTUUS (2014)

THE BURNING CENTURIES (2015)

PÕHJAST - INTERVIEW

  1. The band members live in disparate places, how arise the idea of creating Põhjast?       Actually we never planned such an international project, it all sort of turned out this way after a row of coincidences and random ideas. The start of the project was sometime in 2007/2008, when I left my long-time main band. Since my further creation needed to be brought to life, I started cooperating with a friend, who played drums.

2. Estonia and Germany are now places where you reside, you all have a good number of bands in which you are involved, how important is it for you Põhjast? Where do you get the time to devote to all the bands?
Currently the members of Põhjast are from Estonia, Canada and Finland. Mr Taaken (Odal, Wolfsschrei, Black Devastation Records) was from Germany, but he played on the first EP/LP of Põhjast. To me personally Põhjast is very imporant - this is, afterall, my own “baby”, who needs to be taken care of. Hopefully it will become somebody when it grows up :) There’s always a scarcity of time of course, as there are priorities. I must just find time…

3. Why did you choose a name for the group as Põhjast?
The meaning of Põhjast to me is ambiguous. In general it represents a compass point. But on the other side, it is a beginning of something new - something from the bottom up. So it is kind of a word game. It also has a more meaningful side.

4. They are thus central recording Estonia, but how is your way of working on new compositions and how your way of recording?
True, main ideas have come though me, but I wouldn’t wish to overemphasize it in any way - the way Põhjast sounds and breathes is still a mutual effort of everyone involved.
The most important part of my own workflow is that I take the time to dedicate myself to writing Põhjast material. I take a couple of weeks and dedicate myself only to this one thing. This works well for Põhjast.

5. With "Thou Strong, Stern Death" published in 2012, you offer an album with a clear influence of classic heavy, a dirtier sound, how you describe this album and what was important for the band?
I myself would call Põhjast music “nordic metal”. It kind of summarizes all the elements that characterize the music of Põhjast. What’s most awesome is that some riffs that I have played in my head might never sound like that initially - everything changes! After drums, base, and most importantly the vocals, the end result might not be at all what I imagines in the first place :)
6. But your latest release "Matused" is a a'lbum more influenced by doom and black classic sound will viking, how you describe this new album and how the band's sound has evolved between the two?
I mentioned earlier that everything might change the initial idea. This applies also to the album “Matused”. My initial idea to flirt with obvious cliches, was totally turned upside down :)
7. Candlemass and Bathory are two bands that I think has been a great influence in your sound, apart from all the classic heavy metal, are for you these your main influences?
Definitely those two bands have played a big role in the development of Põhjast, however, I am already in that age that I can definitely say - I have been most influenced by the music I first knowingly listened in my youth. Doesn’t matter if it was the British icon The Smiths or the Brazilian death escadron Sarcofago…

8. Another element of your sound destacarle are clean vocals, Eric Syre is normally Will you sing for them or did you choose this project?
Eric is definitely the trademark of Põhjast :) I would never imagin Põhjast without him. We had a contact with him in form of a particular project also before Põhjast and thus having him in Põhjast was a logical sequel.

9. How to treat the lyrics of Põhjast and inspires you to write about it?
Põhjast lyrics are written by my good friend. His texts are rather based on real life, not fantasies. Although one does not certianly exclude the other.

10. Will it still Põhjast always a study group or sometime may get to offer a concert?
We have already received offers to play at some festivals but at the moment it seems that the time is not ripe yet. We all have bands, some performing constantly. I am not entirelly convinced that we should do this with Põhjast as well. Let’s just say that life will tell…

11. How were your beginnings in music, first cds, concerts, etc? Why choose sen musician? Today preserves the same enthusiasm as when you started?
If you ask about how I came about music, then mainly though my brother, who is 6 years older than me. In his youth he used to listen to bands such as Motorhead, Nazareth, Black Sabbath, Boston, etc. I must also mention my cousin, who introduced me to The Who, The The, The Velvet Underground, The Smiths.
I believe I never knowingly chose to become a musician, it was rather a row of coincides, as it usually is with life… Most of my friends shared the same taste in music, noone knew nothing about playing any instruments, but the will was bigger than obstacles!
My affection towards playing music or music in general has somewhat changed or alternated over the years but what’s important is that I have sticked to it! Nowadays it is all so easy - there are limitless possibilities to play, practice, record. I don’t wish to sound like an old fart, but despite (or may be because?) of all the possibilities there is too much superficiality and mediocricty. If you cannot impress the audience within the first 30 seconds in youtube then noone cares. I really do not wish to participate in such a “game” :)

12. Your covers have a pagan component, wolf, nature, who designs your covers and how they relate to your music?
Yeah, our cover designs are even misleading perhaps, as based on the covers, most would probably expect us to play fierce black metal opus :) Let’s just say that I have always enjoyed such epic handmade cover designs, but I have never been able to take seriously the epic content that has accompanies such designs (I mean the lyrics) and I categorically refuse those modern digital age covers in case of Põhjast :) This is our bow to old-school and I think it is cool! The first cover design was made by Finnish artist Ritual (Nucleart Design - Impaled Nazarene, Ensiferum, Jess & The Ancient Ones) and our last cover design was by a living legend Kris Verwimp.

13. Stormspell Records has released "Matused" why did you decide to change from record to this new release? Satisfied with the work done by Stormspell Records regarding promotion? See a vinyl edition?
There have been some major changes in Spinefarm Records and I believe that bands of our kind do not probably have a chance in this company…
We are satisfied with the CD that was released by Stormspell Records, but we do not have information about any kind of promotion - we have a license deal and it suited us both.
Of course we would wish to see the album between vinyl covers, as the studio master was made especially for the vinly too. So hopefully in the future there is someone willing to release it.

14. What future plans for 2016 have for the band?
In all probability the year 2016 should become an album year! Although we haven’t chosed a record company yet, we have the material and it is in the stage of pre-productions right now. Might be that some changes might occur with this album, but it is too early to talk about that ;)

15. Thank you very much for taking the time to Black Metal Spirit, if you want to add something for the followers of Põhjast, this is the place. I hope the questions are to your liking.
Thank you for your support! I also invite everyone to support musicians and music, and if possible, buy music in a physical form so that quality music could be made also in the future!.

PROMO 2015
Oh, fertile Mercury, show us how to embrace the silence. The foretelling powers of man run dry. Your refuge, take beyond the grasp of man, enthroned above the seat of kings. Free from contamination of clarity. When the hand points to still contemplation, withdraw the consciousness into the vacuum of the mind. Oh, fertile Mercury, show us how to embrace the silence. The foretelling powers of man run dry. Let no sound or motion tremble the currents of your flight. Transcend the construct of time and let your light shine so bright that no man sees you. Solitary upon the tops above the crowds, meticulous, both in mind and motion. Hidden lore adorns the pages of his tome, crystal thoughts, secure from wavering. Encased in silent composure. And the great beast of hell, as dormant at the heel. Boast control of speech, action and thought Become a conductor to the knowledge, hidden in plain sight by the intricate measures of the gods. Tend to the secret seed of all life’s serpent plan. Oh, steadfast Aion, show us how to embrace the silence. The foretelling powers of man run dry. Grace us with the salving rains of insight.
2. Praedormitium 05:57
Ridden to the swirling pit, christened in the mara’s spit.
Into deeper realms of restlessness stirred, compelled to fall in line.
Witch-moon, upon your creek of blood afloat,
guide the stricken through the night,
that, from the womb of Babalon, they may spring to greet the dawn.
Brooding heavy upon your chest, I will attend you as a nocturnal fury.
While homunculi flit between the borders of the realms.

The Kephra arise.

The presence looming through the thick veils of twilight,
solemn figures in shreds of carrion clad.
It is the jackal god in dual form who at the threshold stands.
Hazards warded off by the sentinel’s blade.
The lantern of the herald illuminates the path.
Send the vapours of the calm streams aloft
in churning, breeching, breaking waves.

A hollow cry rends the parish of the mind
and robs the eyes of sight.
Wretched, feral, revellers aline.

Fade into ferocious colours as the breath of life ignites.
3. Maze of Delusion 09:03
 On the plane of existence,
the arcane grandeur of the sorcerer’s dreams
mimics divinity.

Watch how the currents change
and the flora bends to his words,
in a magnificent mockery.

Skin-deep is the influence of man
and capricious are his goals.
His exploits are vanity.
The hubris of man is his strive to alter
and his lack of willingness to adapt.

Baboon:
Whose words can be exalted when words are of the soil?
Far from celestial splendour, mere illusions are all that you can hope to beget.
Unfit to achieve the sacred diction,
the eloquence of the gods.
The tendrils of mundanity bar shut the hidden regions of the mind.

Baboon:
Each syllable uttered further swallows up your sanctity.
Syphoning your grasp on the world.

Each exhalation, a step further from the truth, a step deeper into the maze.
Great harbinger of the word,
wake the grace of our souls, shatter the walls around our minds.
By the light of the lantern, the serpent coiled staff points towards the hills.
