SLOTH HERDER - INTERVIEW

1 Sloth Herder was founded in 2009 , why did you decide to form the band ? How were the early Herder Sloth ?
We formed with a desire to write aggressive, fucked up songs. In the early days it started with just drums and guitar, then we added vocals and played as a 3 piece until we were able to convince Luke (our bassist) to join. Our approach hasn't changed much since.

2 Your music combines different styles , doom , sludge , hardcore , grind and black , how do you define the style of the band?
The style or genre is best for the people who listen to us to decide. It's difficult these days as most bands crossover many styles of extreme music, it makes labeling obsolete. Frankly we think it's a good thing not to be cornered into one genre, letting you freely experiment with all styles in the best interest of the song. We have referred to ourselves as a Power Slob band.

3 Capture all the energy released an album in your music I guess should not be easy , how is your way to work in the studio for composing the songs ?
All of our material is written, dissected, and then reassembled  in the writing process. And always during our rehearsals. Songs won't be considered for a release until we're happy with the result. This way when we go into the studio we know every part inside and out.

4 So far you've released two EP but soon also editareis a split with Horde of the Eclipse , with respect to these two Eps , how was the process of writing and recording ? Pleased with the impact that you have achieved them?
Our writing process almost always starts with us exchanging riffs or sections of songs we've written. Then we add drums so that we have a skeleton of a song, over time we will flesh out parts and transitions to make sure everything fits and has that sloth herder charm and then bass and vocals are incorporated usually throughout this process. Once everyone is happy, and we all have to be happy, the song is finished. As for recording, Sluggard was recorded live in single takes and we did vocals separately. Abandon pop sensibility was approached differently as we tracked each instrument separately. Both ep's got a fair amount of attention and we were very pleased with peoples reactions. Especially in regard to Abandon Pop Sensibility.

5 I guess your musical influences are varied , what groups have inspiredyou to compose your music?
That varies a lot between the 4 of us. Definitely a lot of hardcore and grunge and obviously black metal and grind of course. everything from sonic youth and the cure to deathspell omega and blut aus nord. However Assuck was probably the main influence for founding the band.

6 Speaking a little of your impending split release with Horde of the Eclipse , how to realize the possibility arose? Are there substantial variations with respect to what has been offering Sloth Herder , in his earlier works ?
We have played a number of shows with Horde of the Eclipse and we wanted to do a split with them mainly because we think they kick ass but also because we have very different styles but a mutual admiration for each other. I think everyone will be pleased.

7 I imagine your attending a concert should be an experience , does a concert for you involves an obligation or something that you feel comfortable?
Playing live is very important for us as a band. We feel any material that we write and release we should also be able replicate in the live setting. The first real shows took place in Spring 2010 as a 2 piece, vocals were added that summer and then bass was added to the live lineup in late 2011. Every now and then due to extenuating circumstances, we have periods of time where live shows take a backseat. However, once we return, we always make a strong comeback regardless of the situation. We would love do to some small tours in the future and continue bringing our music to unseen fringes of the underground

8 U.S. extreme scene is in good health and have recently appeared many bands that have managed to combine the sound of black with other such as the sludge , the grind or hardcore , do you you feel part of this scene , how is live from the inside the emergence of new bands?
Yes and no. Yes we are part of the very much alive American underground scene, but it's hard to feel at home in something so vast and often cliquey. Seeing the scene flourish is always good. It brings more opportunity for all bands and loads of cool shows. At the same time it can be frustrating trying to establish your band.

9 How were your beginnings in music , first concert , your first records you bought you ? Why you decided to become musicians ?
All of us have had life long affairs with music, we've all been playing music and instruments since we were little kids. So it just sort of happened that we became musicians, I don't know there was ever a conscious decision. We grew up in family's with parents or siblings that played, so it's something we were all exposed to our entire lives.

10 Abandon the cover of Pop Sensibility , who 's design ? Relate how your music with the cover?
The album cover is a picture taken from our bassist Luke's childhood home in Jefferson, MD.  It has this bleak, hopeless yet eerily calm atmosphere to it. That was our goal. We wanted a departure from the typical metal imagery, and we felt it was a more accurate representation than your typical satanic imagery associated with the style.

11 What is the main theme of your lyrics and that inspires you when writing ?
Overall themes are alienation, struggle, and collaboration. These three things can be connected while appearing to be polarized. Personal growth is important to this band, and is usually achieved through experiencing these three things. From there we touch on all
sorts of subjects. Anything else and it wouldn't fit with our musical output. As far as inspiration goes, its pretty much everywhere. Our ownactions and of those around us, whether experiencing it first or second hand. While its easy to draw inspiration from something negative and picture perfect for a grim story like war and degradation which we have done and will do in the future, you need to see the forest for the trees.

12 Your two self-released EPs have been to for you and your esta'n available on bandcamp, is there any label interested in releasing your material ?
There has been some interest. We will be working with a label for our next release. We released the split with Horde of the Eclipse through Unholy Anarchy Records, but we plan on trying to remain free agents. Working with labels and also self releasing material.

13 A prominent part of the edition of your split with Horde of Eclipse, I have Quee future plans for the band?
We are currently writing a full length album and are working with a local label. We plan to begin recording soon and are hoping for an early 2016 release. No big plans for shows or tours in the near future, but we will be playing one off shows regularly. We also just re-recorded 4 old songs from an early, unreleased demo that you can download for free on our bandcamp.

14 Thank you very much for taking the time to Black Metal Spirit , if you want to add something for the followers of Sloth Heder, this is the place . I hope the questions are to your liking .
Thank you for the opportunity, Fran. We will continue to churn out the ugliest music we can for those who want to hear it. You can follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Bandcamp.

KIRKEBRANN - INTERVIEW

Draug: Es jodido Punk Black Metal.

V.O. IN ENGLISH

1- The band was created in 2008 when a more or less stable formation is achieved but what really origins are in 2004 with sole member Draug. What happened during these four years for the project was stopped in 2008 and happened to once and for all officially create Kirkebrann?
Draug: Well, it started with a few songs and the band name only, and it remained that way for a year or two he he. It was when i hooked up with our old drummer things started to envolve. I wrote songs that we arranged and pre recorded them in my old basement and i guess it was about almost 40 songs in a year. It was when my friend wanted us to play at his festival, and i started to look for band members. With all members in place and a rehersal room we started rehersaling and got ready for our first gig at the Hammerslag festival. We had some line up changes since then but i think we are a stable band now.

2- The name Kikebrann refers to the burning of churches, whether in the past due to human error or more recently with movements that have to do with black metal, why did you decide this name and is there any connotation behind it?
Draug: Yes, its a name that will get noticed and of course lots of people hate it, some laugh about it but everybody will think of Black Metal when they hear a band name like that. I guess that's why i picked the name and because i think a burning church is a beutifull sight, a pice of art i guess he he. We see the burning church not only as a symbol of anti christianity but a symbol of anti religion and that's what we are all about.

3- If I'm not mistaken you can count on some tests to make your own recordings, done that allows you to not be overwhelmed with the time and money involved in having to rent some. "Når dør alt", your last album to date and there was conceived, how is your way of composing and recording?
Draug: The Når alt dør album was mostly songs i have composed that we arraged together at rehearsal, and with our own studio we have time to let our creativity work in our recording session. In the next album, more of us are writing and we still arrange them in rehearshal. We still have our own studio so we dont have to rush during recording. It's good then we can do a bit changes and spice things up without booking studio time and paying lot of money he he.

4- In short'll edit your new album, what can you forward about it?
Draug: We should have been starting recording but we dont rush it. It will be 12 songs; most of them are finished arraged now so we soon start recording drums. It will be a bit different than the last album but still the Kirkebrann sound.

5- Could we talk of Gorgoroth as one of your main musical influences?
Draug: I guess so. The first 3 Gorgoroth albums are fantastic and i guess I get a bit influenced by them. Also early Darkthrone albums are fucking great.

6- Your letters concern the Norwegian story, continue to keep this issue on the new album? What consider relevant elements of the history of your country to address them in your lyrics?
Draug: No, no history in this next album. It will be all anti religion and hatred at the arrogance of humans. Most lyrics on this album are written by me and Skroemt so i guess we share the same view of life he he. All lyrics will be in norwegian this time and maybe a bit more personal.

7- Your sound has a lot of influence of black-nineties, but your songs are extremely straightforward and short, at what should i miss this ?
Draug: It's Punk fucking Black Metal. It's straightforward and pretty short songs, but that's the way i write. We dont need like endless songs with riffs going on forever... that's not our style. This is our kind of Black Metal, so we think "if you dont like it, fuck off!!"

8- When a concert of Kirkbrann, what differences are there in your main computer and instruments with respect to which you use in the rehearsal?
Draug: We record with the same backline we use to record with. No trigger and shit like that, just putting microphones on our backline and record. Well, we don't do live recording, we record one instrument at the time but still the same backline. A concert you will get a different sound anyway because every room has a different sound, there will be different soundtechs and we dont always play with our own backline.

9- You proceed to the Østlandet region, south of Norway, specifically the city of Vestfold, how extreme scene in your town?
Draug: Vestfold is not a city he he. Its an area with citys like Tønsberg, Sandefjord, Larvik and Horten. Members of Kirkebrann are spreaded around in those cities. Not much happening in the extreme scene as far as i know, but there are a few bands i know like Svikt, Svidd and Concrete, and maybe a few more. There were more bands here before but i guess there are less “recruits” to the metal scene than before he he. We dont have our extreme metal festival (Hammerslag festival) anymore and not many metal places at all. I guess you have to go to Oslo for that shit he he.

10- How did you get started in music, first bands and concerts? Why did you decide to become a musician?
Draug: I guess i started with the classic 70s rock bands. Im still fan of it and remember my first concert in 97, I guess with Black Sabbath. It was awesome, still love that band. I started playing bass when i was 9 or 10 but i quit and didnt start playing again before i was in my early 20s but then guitar he he. I like playing the guitar but always end up writing songs instead of practicing. I guess thats why i wanted to start a Black Metal band to get my music out.

11- Where it has been recorded and mixed the new album? Will Blackcrowned Records seized of the issue and distribution? Will it be published in a special format such as vinyl? Do you have already prepared a presentation concert?
Draug: No plans of presentation concert yet, we must first see when it will get released he he. We will record in our own studio as our last album and maybe mixed in the same studio as last. Blackcrowned dont exist as far as i know and we were not to happy with it either. We have been talking to a label but nothing is decided yet. Yes, i hope to release the next album in vinyl and cd, we will also work next year to release the Når alt dør album on vinyl as well. We will finish recording and mix this year and release it late this year or early next one i guess.

12- Thank you very much for taking the time to Black Metal Spirit, if you want to add something for the followers of Kirkebrann, this is the place. I hope the questions are to your liking.
Draug: The one who hates is awake!

VACANT (2015)

1. Ethereal Aura Pt. I 03:18
I've wanted nothing more

Than to learn to trust my fellow man
A desire I have yet to reach
A meaningless endeavor
Far beyond my grasp
I still reach out to thin rope
A slave to my own nature
I still cannot be changed
2. Ethereal Aura Pt. II 07:18
I am the dead eyes that reinvigorate your spite for mankind
I am the dead hands that bind you to the ice
I am the dead arms that pull you under
We were bitter adversaries
Yet we now drown together
And an eternity later
I can still feel your presence
Like a storm cloud that never rains
Our auras, eternal companions
And I am still the antagonist
3. Lucid 09:53
Where did this bliss go?
Why have my feet planted again?
I never asked to be woken up
When will it all fall?
The walls that keep us bound here
When will it all fall to the ground?
Let the ravens black the sky
Into a blank canvas
I wish to experience the conscious world
As vividly as a lucid dream
Let me become one with an unseen worl
4. With Vacant Eyes 08:24
With vacant eyes, I stare at these endless landscapes
Where life and death become irrelevant
My feeble hands meet the ground again
This is my rapport with the earth
It is said that all beauty must come to an end
I now repeat this statement
As I watch this realm burn down
This surreal place I've found is burning to the ground and I am left with nothing
A vacant, shapeless world is what I now wake up to
5. Lonesome 03:37  instrumental
6. Bitter 11:18
Eye to eye
I face a soulless man
I've been waiting for this moment forever
The day all of his wrongs will be accounted for
With a stoic expression
I thrust the knife in
And twist until my hand falls weak
This is goodbye, my friend
This is the most real thing I have experienced
Blood stains the mirror
Of which I face
The last sight I ever see...

UNDERGROUND LO-FI SONGS (2012)

THE OATH - INTERVIEW

1. The band was created in 1999, why did you decide to create The Oath at that time? Why did you choose the name of The Oath?
Hola! The idea was pretty simple: In 1999, I (Pierre) and two very good friends of mine started the band. We simply met each other at school. At the beginning the idea was very simple: play metal music, have fun, and drink a lot of booze…
We choose this name because it was pretty catchy, efficient and focused on our primary principles: loyalty, discipline and determination… We started a while ago with that name, many years after it still sounds cool to me and the rest of the guys, so I think we made the right choice!

2. "Consequences" is your latest album to date, the fact is that until 2007 did not have maintained a roughly adjusts editions space, What happened in the band during 1999-2007, to almost not have any activity?
Several material and line-up issues unfortunately… We simply did our best when we could!
If it had depended on us, our first album would be released earlier… But when the writing process goes well, you also need to prepare your budget and studio scheduling to book everything in the better possible way. Money and time are the real guilty here, not our busy lives or our lack of inspiration…

3. Returning to "Consequences", how was the process of writing and recording the album? What is your way of working in the studio?
Our creation process always starts with an emotion! It can be a melody, a guitar or a bass riff, some keys arrangements… This is why a band like us is priceless: everyone can have an idea that gives new ones to the others. It’s like an “anti-one man band” process. Each one of us could write a cool song. But if we share our feelings we can make awesome songs together. Of course, it’s not always that simple, but when it works, it’s magic!
When we enter the studio, 90% of the album is already written. The last 10% are due to the idea or last time arrangements of our German master-producer… Time is money, so that’s why most of the details are fixed before entering in the studio!

4. Can we say "Consequences" is your album of maturity and represents the sound and style of the band?
Yes and no… Our evolution is still in progress. I mean we don’t want to make the same song and/or album again and again… Our first preoccupation is to provide to our fans (and of course to us) original and kickass tracks, with the same recipe!
I think “Consequences” is a sort of mix between different steps of our evolution. You can feel the direct and cold riffing of our 2nd album entitled “4” and the progressive and mature approach of our latest release “Sel-Destructed”. Maybe we added more electronics elements and a little bit more clean vocals lines as well, but other than that, it’s sounds 666% THE OATH! At the end, I can clearly say this is (for now) the best album we did so far. You can find emotion, catchiness, maturity and kickass production… All you need to bang your head and have some fun!!

5. The Oath sound and an album like "Consequences" is complex and varied, difficult to pigeonhole for a critical but highly recommended as a listener, come together in the heavy metal and classical, death, the black, some symphonic, how would you define your sound and what are your main influences?
Thanks for the compliments! We define ourselves as an original and unique band creating a kind of melodic extreme metal with prog’s elements usually called “Melodic Blackened Progressive Death Metal”.
As said before, with “Consequences”, we followed our way through other musical experimentations and the result is pretty awesome; but our influences and the differents metal kind we listened to are directly connected to our creativity:
We grew up with many heavy/thrash main bands during the 80’s/90’s like IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, SLAYER, MEGADETH, HELOWEEN, METALLICA… At the end of the 90’s, many extreme bands gave us a new breath, in influences terms, like the Gothenburg scene with major bands like AT THE GATES, EDGE OF SANITY, DARK TRANQUILLITY, or the first black metal melodic actors like CRADLE OF FILTH, EMPEROR, DIMMU BORGIR, etc. We could also talk about bands like PARADISE LOST or SENTENCED for the gothic mood, but there are too many awesome bands…
Just mix these opposites universes and you can see where our roots start! Maybe that’s why we created something very hard to label with the band; we really have our own “touch”.

6. At the same time the letters also offer not very common themes in the black, in what inspires you to write the texts?
Non-conformism, commitment, self-behaving… Generally, my lyrics treat about life perception in general, with a cynical point of analysis. The main theme describing someone’s existence, always torn between the mainstream way of thought/live and it’s own really based on real unique feelings and emotions…

7. If you had to choose a theme of your latest album that you best represent what would it be and why?
I want to say “Never to be seen again”. It’s not only because it’s the opening track, but mostly because you can easy get and feel what’s THE OATH musically means. Here, you can find fast and extreme guitar riffing mixed with a hardcore kind of bridge, before an atmospheric part with clean vocals and other things… Weird to say/read, but nice to hear; trust me!

8. What remains today at the sound of "Consequences" of eg your 2007 album "The End of Times"?
Catchiness and inspiration! But our first album deserved a better sound… Anyway without that piece of our discography, they would not be any “Consequences”; no remorse no regrets!

9. It is very complex to capture live, in concert, the sound of an album like "Consequences" What brand of tools you use in rehearsal and you use the concert?
Yes, it’s almost impossible because of the numerous arrangements and sounds we used during the recording. We simply use our usual gears, reach on stage, plug and play!
Each gig is different because of the venue, the backline matters… welcome in the underground! But after all these years we always try to play our songs in an energetic and efficient way without forgetting the mood we built, to touch every audiences!

10. By the way, how about the recent concert in Italy and as you face the next in France?
Our open-air Italian last appearance was awesome, thanks for asking! Playing in an beautiful and natural venue with great bands and the mighty Dark Funeral was more than a chance…
Our forthcoming show in France will of course be different, but really nice too! We will play with Dagoba, which is a very popular band in France in a great venue; sure it will be an another night to remember!

11. Is there an interesting extreme scene near Lyon? What can you tell us from other bands in your area?
Yes, metal is everywhere! Even in France, which is definitely not a “metal country”… Anyway, If I had one name for you guys it has to be Aesmah. Nice and open-minded metal heads whom playing the perfect mix between Insomnium and Dark Tranquillity… Modern and old school… check them out!

12. How did you get started in music, first concerts, first cds? Why did you decide to form a band? Still having today the same enthusiasm as when you started?
I personally started with a Maiden tape and the “Murder in the rue Morgue” song when I was 10! After that, everything changed… Without this first metal experience, I can say now that my life would be very different… My first concerts were Maiden, Megadeth, Slayer during the late 80’s; simply magic…
As I said before, starting music was mostly connecting to the will to spend some time with my metal friends and have some fun!
Absolutely! It’s amazing to see how, after all these years, we still “exist” and have a lot of duties (and support) to our friends, fans, partners, medias, other bands/musicians…). We are overwhelmed because of our global investment, mostly because of our musical and human being consistencies. This commitment means a lot to us… kind of dedication.
As the last former member, I can say objectively than I’m very proud to have the band in my life after more than one decade. It’s not a daily job, it’s further than that; that’s maybe why it’s still difficult to switch between “real life” and your band after all… We are the band, but we are getting old, time runs fast and we all have responsibilities elsewhere…

13. Why did you decide Sliptrick Records will release the album? Satisfied with the work done by the label? Seguiras in the future linked to them?
This partnership is a brand new deal for them and us. In fact, we were out of contract with our past Italian label Code666 Records after 2 releases.
We sent a couple of streaming pieces to label targeted related to your music kind and ability to provide us what we looked for; simple as that!
The Sliptrick crew seems very enthusiastic and professional since the very first days of our collaboration. The promo plan just started, so it’s difficult for me to judge anything now, but I’m sure everything will go well!

14. Who designed the album cover and how it relates to the content of it?
The cover was conceived once again by the outstanding French artist Fursy Teyssier from the band Les Discrets, whom works with bands like Alcest, Agalloch and many more. As a friend of mine and a talented mind, he did what we all expected: a very dark and powerfull cover with an catchy non-conformism visual main theme!

15. What future plans do you have for the band in terms of upcoming releases, publications and concerts?
We will finish the promo around the “Consequences" release and, I hope, will play live as much as possible (according to our non-metalhead lives…).

16. Thank you very much for taking the time to Black Metal Spirit, if you want to add something for the followers of The Oath, this is the place. I hope the questions are to your liking.
Thanks to you for this nice and fresh interview! Hope all you guys will enjoy our musical universe!

BALMOG

SVMMA FIDE (2015)
