HELLÉBORE - INTERVIEW

1.Your first release is the demo of 2012, why did you decide to create the group and referred to the name of Hellebore?

I’ve been composing riffs and melodies for years, but I never really managed to compose a complete song before those on the demo. I don’t know why exactly I decided to do so… I just felt like doing it, I guess. “Aootw” is the very first song that I arranged and recorded (and it still is my best work in my opinion). I’m not too proud of the other songs from the demo: they sound bad, their lyrics are dumb and I misused a lot of good ideas…

I named the project “Hellébore” because that word means something special to me.

2.Last year he released "Anouof thwo", how has been the recording process and composition of this album?

The recording process is always an hassle, because I’m not a very good musician and I record my music with very cheap equipment. The composition process went great however. I had good riffs and melodies, and I was very excited to put them together.

3.Hellbore music is strongly influenced by atmospheric black orientation towards science fiction and space, what are your main influences when creating music Hellebore? Reason why you are attracted to science fiction themes?

I sure am influenced by atmospheric black metal bands such as Verdunkeln, Lunar Aurora as well as some Rhinocervs’ untitled tapes, but I don’t know if it shows in Hellébore’s sound. Some 80’s post-punk and gothic rock bands influenced me as well. For instance, I’m a huge fan of the Chameleons.

3.What refers album title "Anouof thwo"?

 Nobody but me will ever know what that title stands for, sorry!

4.Darksapce, Cancer Galaktic Squad are also bands that have a similar sound to that of hellbore atmosphere, I mean that atmosphere of loneliness in space, are you familiar with the releases of these bands?

I love Darkspace. It is an amazing band, I can’t wait for the new release coming out next Fall. Their approach is quite different from mine : space is a simple thematic for me, but Darkspace’s sound totally incarnate it. I’m not a fan of Cancer Galaktic Squad though, their music just doesn’t appeal me.

5.Northeastern Canada has a rich black metal scene, how music fits into the current hellbore scene black?

Some Québec black metal bands are very good, such as Forteresse, Monarque, Maléfices… Hellébore however doesn’t belong to that scene, I don’t have any contacts with those bands.

6.From what I can guess, Hellebore in a band one member, are you willing to to incorporation into a future of new members?

Never. Hellébore will always be a one member project. I don’t want to deal with another dude’s ideas and opinions, I want to take my own decisions regarding my music.

7.What does it feel like to convey to the listener with your music, maybe the feeling of emptiness?

When I listen to my songs, I only feel positive energy. Hellébore isn’t really dark even though it is somehow born from dark feelings. When listening to Hellébore, you’re supposed to feel like you’re somewhere else, far from Earth, and feel good about that.

8.How did you get started in music as a child and why you decided to become a musician?

I started playing guitar when I was 13 or 14. I was mainly listening to pop-punk and Californian punk-rock bands back then. I’m not a very good guitar player even though I’ve been playing for nearly a decade. I have some great ideas but my technique is bad and I can barely play the keyboards. I don’t think of myself as a musician, but more as a composer. I still managed to record an album that sounds quite good to me, I’m proud of that.

9.What future plans do you have for Hellebore, about upcoming releases, etc?

I don’t really have plans for an upcoming release at the moment. I’ve composed several new songs, but I don’t feel like recording them. So it is unlikely that a new Hellébore album will come out this year… I haven’t written any new lyrics yet, I don’t know if it’s going to be about space again. The only thing I know is that the music will be a bit more post-punk oriented.

KVRX (2014)

El segundo Ep de la banda nos ofrece tres temas nuevos (uno de ellos una intro) y se completa con los temas de su anterior Ep "Non Pietatem Erit" a modo de bonus track, Ep editado hace un par de años y en el cual se nos presentaban con un black metal melódico y frío deudor de la escena escandinava de la década de los noventa, siendo su principal lastre el de la producción, que no acababa de hacer justicia a los temas. En cuanto al nuevo Ep que nos ocupa, se han corregido errores anteriores, la banda nos sigue ofreciendo un crudo, oscuro y melódico black metal, pero la producción ha ganado enteros, su música es más contundente y se ha evolucionado en las composiciones. Los temas son extensos y en ellos por fin brillas los riffs de bella factura, permitiendo una progresión en los mismos y mayor nitidez en las estructuras. Las voces son agresivas y desgarradas con un componente de crudeza y tristeza, los riffs brillan especialmente en las partes más sosegadas de los temas y la evolución a la batería le viene que ni pintado a la música de la banda. Otro interesante proyecto de la escena nacional, con un salto brutal con respecto a su anterior edición, que se antoja un tanto escasa pero que se presupone de lo más interesante en esta nueva dirección que han tomado. मृत्यु का तापसी अनुध्यान (2014)

Con tan solo dos álbumes editados los checos Cult of Fire se han labrado el prestigio y el reconocimiento dentro del black metal. Su estilo traspasa las fronteras de lo ortodoxo para adentrarse en terrenos más experimentales, no olvidemos que estamos ante un trabajo que trata sobre la diosa hindú Kali y aunque la base de su música es black metal incorpora instrumentación en forma de abundantes arreglos de orientación oriental. Un disco que desde el comienzo con esa introducción en donde suena un sitar, hay recitaciones del mantra, nos da una idea de lo cuidadoso y elaborado que es el sonido que nos vamos a encontrar. En su vertiente más metálica el grupo tira por un black melódico, con riffs melódicos de bella factura, voces agresivas y guturales, mientra que la batería está un poco en segundo plano. La sensación que acaban por conseguir es de meditación y contemplación, explorando las culturas orientales, sin ser unos pioneros en el género si que han hecho un buen trabajo en un disco lleno de matices que el oyente ira descubriendo a medida que vaya acumulando escuchas. Un disco que nos muestra a una banda en plena forma que no sabemos donde están sus límites. (9).

MMXIV (2014)

Nueva banda estadounidense con miembros que han militado en grupos de doom y black,siendo esta demo de un par de temas su carta de presentación. Un par de temas extensos y en donde dejan perfectamente marcados el estilo en donde se mueve el grupo que no es otro que el doom más pesado, lento y aplastante con unas voces arrancadas de las profundidades a las cuales se le añade un black oscuro. Llama la atención lo bien que se ha conseguido unir ambas partes de la música, con unas transiciones muy trabajadas entre ambos estilo. No hace falta comentar que ambos temas supuraran un hedor a podredumbre y enfermedad, un sonido demoledor que va haciendo mella en el oyente a base de la contundencia del sonido, apoyado en unas guitarras que brillan especialmente en ambas facetas. SUBTERRANEAN STEEL (2013)

Después del cese de actividad de Usurper en 2007 Rick ha puesto en circulación tres años después a Scythe, ese mismo año llegaba su primer larga duración y en el 2013 "Subterranean Steel" su último trabajo hasta la fecha. La música de Scythe coge el legado de Usurper y de su black de sonido clásico y que huele a tharsh por todas partes, pero en su sonido hay mucho más, en él están presentes todas la vertientes del metal extremo de los años ochenta, imposible no disfrutar de ese heavy clásico, del thrash más añejo y del speed. Y es que la banda tiene la lección bien aprendida, para ello emplea riffs muy buenos rápidos y melódicos y que huelen tanto a thrash como a heavy, también emplean con acierto una batería contundente y dejan hueco para el bajo, instrumento muy presente en su música. Las voces con cazallosas, sin caer en brutalidades innecesarias. Un disco que parece un compendio perfecto de los inicios del metal puesto al día, otra cosa es que aporte algo a la escena, se le puede tachar de continuistas pero no de atesorar suficiente calidad para ser tenidos en cuenta y para ocupar el lugar que se merecen dentro de la vertiente más clásica del género. EPOCH OF FIREWINGED (2013)  

Con más de una década como formación SS-18 siguen adelante con su black metal de tintes bélicos y misantrópicos, promulgando la extinción de la raza humana por medio de un holocausto nuclear, bien es cierto que con una ideología apartada del nazismo. El Ep lo integran cuatro temas de black metal marcial y de tintes bélicos, con una sensación de arrasar con todo lo que encuentra a su paso. Eso si a diferencia de otras bandas con una orientación más death, el sonido de este ep esta muy cuidado y no se torna caótico y lleno de un caos en velocidad y sonidos, SS-18 ofrece un sonido aplastante a base de una batería rápida y unas guitarras rápidas y potentes con unas voces que no hacen abuso de las partes guturales, sino que mantiene una línea muy black. Tal ves el Ep vaya ganando enteros conforme van cayendo los temas, y a un inicio un tanto previsible le sigue unos temas más inspirados en donde la banda delimita mejor su territorios y pone en funcionamiento todo el potencial nuclear exterminador del ejército ruso. HERITAGE (2013)

A lo largo de su existencia All the Cold ha venido ofreciendo demos y splits llenos de black ambiental, frío y por momentos incluso depresivo, sin embargo el Ep que nos ocupa es un cambio de tendencia, desprendiéndose de su pasado más black y evolucionando hacia un rock con momentos de shoegaze y algún que otro arreglo de sintetizador. A pesar de no ser tan oscuro, su música sigue conservado la frialdad de antaño y va sumiendo al oyente en un estado de desesperación y opresión. Las canciones fluyen lentas, como arrastrándose y en ellas podemos apreciar los distintos matices de unos ambientes plagados de soledad. El viraje del sonido de All the Cold seguramente le ha hecho ganar en ambientes y matices en los se puede adivinar la desesperación y la depresión de la mano de la soledad, pero se ha perdido la calidez de la instrumentación en beneficio de excesivos arreglos que caen en la monotonía, la batería se le intuye pero no acaba de estar y las guitarras están sumidas en el caos de arreglos. Tienen listo si primer larga duración, en el cual supongo que seguirán adentrándose en esta nueva vertiente de su sonido, espero que con mejor resultado final. (7,3).

DISSOCIATIVE IDEALS (2013)

Arbiox es el encargado principal de todo lo que sucede alrededor de Side os Despondency, el proyecto dió comienzo en el 2009 y tras un pequeño periodo de inactividad parece que se le ha unido un vocalista para acabar de dar forma, musicalmente hablando, a las ideas de Arbiox. Este Ep puede que acabe siendo un punto de inflexión en la carrera de la banda, lo que es cierto es que nos encontramos ante un Ep con un fuerte componente depresivo y melancólico y alejado de la vertiente más metal de anteriores obras. Dissociatve Ideals nos ofrece un excelente trabajo a la guitarra de un músico que trabaja magistralmente la creación de atmósferas de manera simple y efectiva, haciendo uso de su guitarra logra trasmitir un montón de emociones relacionadas con el estado de ánimo del ser humano. Comentaba anteriormente que la parte más metálica esta menos presente que en anteriores entregas, pero aquí también hay lugar para los riffs de tendencia depresiva acompañados de una voz acorde para la ocasión. Un Ep que se nutre bastante de la faceta más post del metal, resultado emotivo y bien trabajado. (7,9).

KUKAAN EI OPASTA TEITÄ PIMEÄSSÄ (2013)

Primer larga duración para los finlandeses en donde se nos ofrece un black agresivo, con un fuerte aroma a punk mezclado con black, sobe todo en cuanto a actitud. Un álbum que gracias a su producción suena brutalmente crudo desde el principio en detrimento de la variedad, hay que entenderlo y saber escucharlo en su totalidad. Alrededor de Hautakammio no tenemos mucha información, podemos suponer que prefieren que su música tenga mayor protagonismo que el individuo en si, y al música nos habla de un grupo que ha sabido rescatar las influencias de las bandas como Hellhammer y que en mayor o menor medida nos brindan la oportunidad de disfrutar de un disco de black bastante interesante. Con unos riffs crudos y retorcidos con pocos matices, y unas voces que se esconden entre el resto de la instrumentación, sonando también un poco solapadas, lo cierto es que la producción le hace un flaco favor a este trabajo que peca un tanto de continuista y lineal. CHAMBERS OF PERVENSION (2010)  

Sin llevarnos a equivocos con los también australianos Ruis, aquí el alemán se nutre más del thrash y casi corroborando que se encuentra en un período de letargo este Ep fue uno de los últimos lanzamientos de Sven Klaka. Black con fuerte aroma a thrash clásico y con algún que otro guiño al punk. Riffs brutales, a descubrir en las composiciones, batería demasiado presente por momentos, ocultando otros instrumentos y voces muy thrash. Todo un compendio de como debe de sonar una banda que quiere recoger lo mejor de la tradición thrash de bandas como Sodom y del black de los primeros Bathory para en apenas veinte minutos ofrecerlo de manera actual y muy buena. Letras llenas de odio hacia el cristianismo, blasfemas hasta la médula, satanistas y sin olvidar el sexo. MUTILATING ASTRAL ENTITIES (2013)

Este álbum viene a calmar los anhelos de los fans más acerrimos de la banda estadounidense que a lo largo de estos años ha venido ofreciendo pequeñas dosis de su primitivo black metal de regusto punk y que por fin se han decidido a editar en formato larga duración. Con un sonido estridente y sucio se va desarrollando un trabajo en donde el oyente se sumerge en un caos de sonido en donde llama la atención la estridencia de las guitarras, cortantes e hirientes, por momento incluso chirriantes, la batería ocupa un papel fundamental al construir un muro monótono ds sonido, acabando las voces por sonar un tanto solapadas. El resultado final, todo hay que decirlo es un tanto monótono, con poca variedad en la música. Con un producción muy justa acaba por sonar primitivo siendo esta una sensación que termina por trasncender al finalizar la audición. Black estridente e incendiario con un gran componente de punk, tanto en estructuras como en voces que gustara a los fans de los sonidos más primitivos dentro del black. (7).
