DREAMQUEST (1996)
MASTERIIS - INTERVIEW

1 Masteriis born in 2009 as a duo that remains today Morfahnus made by you and both have been part of other bands, including agreeing on other members, why they decided to form Masteriis? For choosing this name Masteriis and offers regarding what other bands play?
Ramnsvarturh: Hello, first of all, thanks a lot for this interview, we really appreciate that. Yes, Masteriis was born late of 2009 as a duo, consist of me and Morfahnus. Me and Morfahnus have played together in several bands since in the mid of the 90`s. We played togheter in Forlorn In Silence and Nebular Mystic. Morfahnus still play in Nebular Mystic today. We started Masteriis in 2009, cause it had been many years since we had played together, and we have always like the same style of music, so we wanted to make new material.

2 Masteriis has released a demo in 2010 and the EP "Dodsdom" in 2011, how is your way of composing and creating threads?
Ramnsvarturh: Yes, we released our first two track demo in 2010. The first demo CD is limited to 250 hand-numbered copies. We still have some copies left, if someone are interested in it. You can hear the track “Dødsdom” on youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEJsfNPA3eE The debut MCD was released by Ewiges Eis Records. This MCD is hand-numbered to 500 copies. You can listen to the clips on youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcQDvcx1T34 Morfahnus usually make all the guitar riffs, and I write the lyrics. The drums we do together.

3 The sound of the Norwegian black Masteriis recalls the years 90¿cuáles are your main musical influences and how they appreciate in your music?
Ramnsvarturh: Our main influences are from the 90`s. I think some of the best Black Metal albums was released in the 90`s.For inspiration, and some important Norwegian Black Metal bands: Immortal, Darkthrone, Satyricon, Burzum, Gorgoroth, Ulver, Emperor, Mayhem (De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas) Dimmu Borgir(Old) And many others.

4.What are the lyrics to the songs Masterris considered important and why write about it?
Ramnsvarturh: The lyrics have always been important for me. Sometimes I Use very long time to write a song, other times I can use very short time. The lyrics from the MCD, deals with Norwegian Mythology and personal sorrows. If you take the song “Into Infiniti Darkness” the lyrics only deals with my personal sorrows.

5 For mastering the Ep have had the Ex Dimmu Borgir Stian Aarstad how the possibility of having it emerged? Satisfied with the work done?
Ramnsvarturh: We recorded and mixed everything with Stian Aarstad. For mastering we used a place in Oslo called Oslo Mastering, also many other Metal/Black Metal bands have done the mastering process there. Stian Aarstad has done a really great job for us, so we are very satisfied with all of his work.

6 For the graphics Kogian Art, what do you want to convey with the album art and how it relates to music?
Ramnsvarturh:Kogian Art did a great job with the cover art. I really hope we can use him in the future also. Since the MCD is called “Dødsdom”( Death Sentence) I think the cover fits both the lyrics and music very well.

7 Is there the possibility of a concert someday Masteriis?
Ramnsvarturh: At the moment, we are only two members. But it would of course be interesting to play live with Masteriis in the future. We played gigs with Nebular Mystic, and that was really great. I`m a person that likes studio work best, but as I said live shows are great to.

8. more than three years ago not editáis nothing new, soon will we see a split or edited album?
Ramnsvarturh: Since the MCD, we have released 2 new songs, called “På Hedensk Jord” and “Pain In Silence” We have use both of the tracks for the Slowly We Rot Magazine(Compilation CD).

9 How did you get started in music? Is it easier to have a band of black in a country like yours?
Ramnsvarturh: I think in the early days it was more easy. Especially if you played Black Metal. Now that Black Metal has been so big, I don’t think it is so “important” where you come from any longer. I remember I started to dream about making a band in a very you age, almost when I bought my first metal tapes.

10 How does the possibility of working with the seal Ewiges Eis Records come about? Satisfied with the work done by the seal? Will you still linked in the future to Ewiges Eis Records?
Ramnsvarturh: The contract, cooperation with Ewiges Eis has been very good. We are very happy with all the work and promotion they have done for us. We hope to release our future releases on Ewiges Eis.

11 Thank you very much for your time, talking to Black Metal Spirit. If you want to add something to the followers of Masteriis, now is the time. Were the questions I hope to your liking.
Ramnsvarturh: A big thanks to you also! We still still have Masteriis MCD and T-Shirts for sale. The T-Shirts are limited to 40ex, so act fast. Me and Morfahnus have released a compilation CD called “Mørketid” The CD contains 12 different bands. The two new Masteriis songs are also included. AS FONTES DO NEGRUME (2013)

LITANY OF THE MOON (2013)
HERETICAL - INTERVIEW

1 The origins of Heretical back to 1993, back then I denominations Immolator and during the three years of this band I served editing about three demos, how were those years of Immolator and creating the possibility of creating the band?
AZMEROTH: We’re talking about the beginning of a great era, where band such Ancient Rites, Moonspell and many others moved the first steps. Years that will never come again, merciless years, black years.

2 In 1996 Immolator comes to an end, the band's style becomes more symphonic and changes the name Heretical, although the bulk of the original members remain in the band, led do you change the name of the band and change somewhat the same musical style?
AZMEROTH: If I remember correctly, there are two main reasons. The first regards the similarity with Immolation, and this situation didn’t satisfy us;  the second reason was about OWL (first bassist and co-founder of the band) that in 1996 was fired from the band taking for himself the merits of the band’s name and creating too much confusion. Therefore, to avoid future problems about the rights, we decided to change name in HERETICAL, taking inspiration directly from a famous song of Possessed, “the Heretic”. Surely the name Heretical fits more to the sound we have adopted over the years. Today the Heretical’s line-up is formed by Azmeroth - Guitars (Bass Studio;) Orias – Keyboards;  Nefarius – Vocals; Arymon – Drums and the newcomer Argus Szator – Guitars.

3 I guess all these changes within the group were not simple, serve as an example that the only original member are you, what happened in those years Heretical gradually the members were leaving the project and replaced by saw musicians?
AZMEROTH: Yes. Unfortunately it isn’t easy to go ahead with a constant change of members, anyway the main reason was due to personal problems private and not for problems related to music. I still see some former members.

4 Heretical far has released three albums, an EP and a couple of Demos, how the sound of the band from the beginning with "De Occulta Philosophia" to your latest album "Dæmonarchrist - Dæmon Est Devs Inversvs" has evolved?
AZMEROTH: Today we are much more violent and we don’t have keyboards in the foreground, the Heretical today are much more guitar oriented. The structure of the songs has radically changed. We don’t want to dwell, in the past it was normal to compose songs for 10-12 min, now we are  much more direct.

5 How was the process of writing and recording this "Dæmonarchrist - Dæmon Est Devs Inversvs"? Are all components contribute ideas or line is still set for you?
AZMEROTH: I’m the main composer. There wasn’t a particular process of composition. It was the inspiration to carry me

6 Why did you choose to Fabio Monaco Empathy Studios Sound of Stockholm for the production of the album? Satisfied with the work he has done?
AZMEROTH: We are 100% satisfied, Fabio and Empathy studios were perfect for the sound we wanted in "Dæmonarchrist - Dæmon Est Devs Inversvs", the disc has a devastating production.

7 I guess after all these years Heretical influences are varied, while you certainly will be referring to more than one group, what are your main musical influences and why you consider important?
AZMEROTH: I listen to metal for many years, it isn’t easy to say who  inspired/influenced me. Some groups important for my musical education are Venom, Bathory, Death SS Sarcophagus, but also other bands such as Dark Fields of the Nephilim.

8 Can it be that the album revolves around a conceptual history? How influential is for you the occult philosophy and suicide present in varying degrees in your texts?
AZMEROTH: Usually our CD are the concept, while "Dæmonarchrist - Dæmon Est Devs Inversvs" is not a concept album, it has a theme that is present in all of his songs, that is evil inside the Christian church. Talks of opposites and of the plot between good and evil. If we examine carefully the title, is nothing more than the union of three appearances, in contrast with each other constantly travelling in one direction: THE DEMON (CORRUPTION), THE MONARCH (DEATH) and CHRIST (THE PASSION) . Our goal isn’t to profane the sacred rites of Christian worship, we seek only to redefine the Christian symbolism and occult, contrasting to one another.

9 Take more than two decades as a musician in the world of black, how did you get started and you want to boost play black metal? How has the black metal scene in Italy over the years What bands consider important within the Italian scene?
AZMEROTH: I started playing black metal for devotion to the darkness. It’s a thing that you must have inside since birth. I always say "I will die black metaller”.  The Italian scene will never grow, it’s a problem for us, because  Italians can’t support us at each other. The bands that deserve respect within black metal are the Mortuary Drape, Necromass and Opera IX.

10 Will the day that the album "Ego Sum Papa" to be edited?
AZMEROTH: Didn’t reflected the Heretical sound, it was nearest to death metal sound. For this reason was never released.

11 Who designed the cover of "Dæmonarchrist - Dæmon Est Devs Inversvs" and how it relates to the content of the album?
AZMEROTH: The artwork is the work of the talented French artist Pierre-Alain D., great artist who has been able to develop perfectly the theme of "Dæmonarchrist - Dæmon Est Devs Inversvs".

12 Paragon Records has released the album, Satisfied with the treatment received and the impact it is having the album in the media?
AZMEROTH: The album was released in the USA by Paragon while in Europe by Beyond Productions, but I honestly expected more especially in terms of promotion.

13 What future plans do you have for Heretical about upcoming releases, concerts, etc. ..?
AZMEROTH:  No new album for at least a year, we would to reprint  our first EP Shub=Niggurath by the addition of 4 bonus, and definitely a split with a historic Sicilian band.

14 Thank you very much for your time, talking to Black Metal Spirit. If you want to add something to the followers of Heretical, now is the time. Were the questions I hope to your liking.
AZMEROTH: Thank you and Black Metal Spirits for support

DODSDOM (2011)

PANOPTICON

ROADS TO THE NORTH (2014)
MOURNFUL EMBRACE OF AEONS (2012)

1. Ode to Glorious War (Intro) 01:39  instrumental
2. Crossing the Primordial Threshold 06:26
In the shadows of our existence Ancient mysteries shrouded in secrecy We embark on this journey To cross the primordial threshold Rising towards the spheres unknown We venture towards the starlit expanse Once ordained within the spheres Of the celestial vortex Now conceived through astral fire On this forsaken voyage... beyond Encircled by the radiance of night Engulfed within a pellucid orb From the fires of impurity The forging of our legacy Our time has come To usurp the throne Now I know what lies beyond Through destiny's gates We'll be left to dwell In the abandoned planes of infinity Ensnared by the shackles of time Life's trammels shall be our curse Into the fathomless depths we fall
3. Arcane Ravel 05:05
I walk a path enshrouded by night's shadow
Into the labyrinth of darkness unhallowed
As now the chambers of light fall before me
I bear the crest of eternal glory

The thorns of chaos entwine
As en emblem of death
When the sun sets in disgust
You will take your last breath

Gaze into the looking glass
Of the ultimate deception
Cryptic secrets are veiled within
The dark void of consciousness

Unleash the forbidden powers
From within the dormant mind
Trespass beyond the seal
Of the silent watcher's shrine

Invert the sigil bound as three
Draw your sword against the trinity
We raise the crown of infinite night
To herald the dawn of heaven's blight
4. Solace Beneath the Shroud 06:12
By mortals' hands the devil was crowned In the nets of Belial dark powers bound Scourge of heaven, thy nemesis Hoisting the powers to which God submits The lie that echoes in your tomb of worship Is the festering shadow Which bleeds through the surface As a mystic spell seared in eternity A broken cosmic reel bound in infinity An ocean of tears could not awaken Your thorn-crowned nameless desperation Silence the breath of humanity Rise from the ashes of ignominy Poison the current of dignity The serpent lurks among you effortlessly Finding your salvation in the garden of iniquity A glorious return to what was meant to be As we stand above you in the fading light Drinking from the chalice To intake the unholy might Lord of night, grant us the mystic powers Enrapture us in darkness God's pathetic religions We will not follow
5. Paragon of Forsaken Virtue 08:49
As the night consumes the final dawn Nebulous secrets call beyond the fog My heart encased in stone Yet sorrow dwells within Thorns adorn my throne Enshrined by immortal sin I rise again to fall into darkness I rise again as the astrum argentum The consecration of fleshly demise Watching empires fall beneath blackened skies Chastised in blood as his sheep now repent Rejoicing in their false God's impotence In the darkness I stand now immortal Engulfed in sin, I reign eternal Sequestered in the silent resonance Within the ashes of life's incense Hell's fires rise to engulf heaven Leaving no trace that it exists No peace is found in the haunted sanctuary Lost in a world of imaginary fears Cursed with the burden of a loathsome perception Under the spell of blackened delirium Sow the wind and reap the maelstrom Drown the voice of reason Lost to shame and dead to honor Dispraised in blank despondency
6. Mournful Embrace of Aeons 07:24
 Artifacts of the great cycle
Destruction of the world-age doctrine
Thrust into a blackened void
The effacement of all consciousness
Entrapped within dimensional thoughts
Forbidden tortures eternally wrought

Through the portals of forsaken flesh
Where the spirit and psyche digress
Mesmerized by the infernal flames
As we await the blood-drenched aeon

Execrate the false theistic lie
Through this doctrine of retribution
From the crypts of inhumanity
Where our wager of sin is absolution

Servants of darkness
Patrons of blasphemy
Our prodigious wisdom
Shall bring forth sovereignty
The end of ages
We now foresee
As Armageddon
Beholds our destiny

Praise humanity's fall
Life's hourglass expired
A tenebrous epoch
Approaches indubious

Following the path
Towards extinction
As this existence
Becomes a retrospection
7. Labyrinth of Gnosis 06:27
 Birthed into this futile
Abject desolation
Disparity's indulgence
Sin humanitas

In the shades below
An altar of flesh defiled
Vituperation
Of man and of God

Innocence condemned and sacrificed
By my hand, unholy domination

Fates decreed with savage expedience
Beget ends of a terrible nature

Who is condemned?
Who is redeemed?
Behold the commencement
Of ghastly tortures

I shall thrust a dagger
Into the collective mind
Without purpose or reason
Except of chaos and blood

In the tunnels of broken mind and soul
A creation without center or boundary
Life is lost in this all-consuming passion
Is the world my soul or my soul the world?

Falling deep into an endless void
Visions of horror manifest
As darkened forces invade your soul
Now possessed you shall beckon their will

I consecrate the arrival
Of the one you disfavor
The legions of light shall perish
And darkness will consume all
8. Doctrine of Serpents 06:19
Eternal night Nocturne of beauty Inviolate darkness Unyielding, undefiled A universal Living cosmos Transcending all Inchoate perception The quintessential essence of all creation Reaps the glorious blessing of extinction Recite the mystic, secret incantation To exorcise thy dissonant enthrallment Beyond all limits, beyond all time We shall bring forth all to purpose Sempiternal, abstruse mysteries Forever veiled, preternatural From the ashes of our pride By virtue of our wonder For those with eyes to seek the wisdom All is revealed Dark mistress, dark lover Worshipful oblivion The substance of transcendence Dark scepter, dark altar Pulsating presence in elusive silence Chaos is order and all is nothing Now brought forth To pervade this acquiescence Order is chaos and nothing is all This despotic wisdom The meaning of existence

MARDUK

SLAY THE NAZARENE (2002)

A HILL TO DIE UPON - INTERVIEW

  • A Hill to Die Upon band started as a decade ago, how were the beginnings of the band? Were always clear that black metal would be the style of music you would practice?             AHTDU has been going strong for exactly ten years. We were not concerned about black metal when we started. We just wanted to play extreme music. At the time, that was hardcore. The hardcore scene in the Midwest was really strong in 2004 and we owe a lot to it for giving us something to plug into right away. Had we started out with extreme metal we would have been the only band in the area and struggled so much just to get shows. Also, we would have sucked. Hardcore is a lot easier than metal, so it was easier to play. Adam and I started playing local shows in Iowa and Illinois just as a two piece and passing around a demo.       Eventually we picked up some other guys and just kept going. Our sound gradually progressed until we became what you hear now. After a few years we weren’t listening to hardcore anymore but more bands like 1349, Behemoth, Satyricon, and Old Man’s Child. We just kept writing faster, darker, and heavier music.

  • Throughout the years you and your brother have remained as the only original members of the band, it is very difficult to maintain a stable lineup in the band? Are you finding it easier to deal with his brother when composing?            We’ve had a lot of good people work with us over the years, but we are just the only two who have stuck with it over the years. It has been very difficult to maintain a solid lineup, but right now we have two guys that are really great players and really good people so we are happy with where we are at. It is always good to have some comrades take up the charge with you.         Typically, Adam writes the music and I write the lyrics. However, Mike Pingel and Nolan Osmond are both doing writing now as well. Elisha Mullins also did a bit of writing for Omens when he was in the band, before joined The Burial. He wrote “Darkness That can be Felt,” “Heka Primus,” and “The Chant of Mighty Offspring.” Thor Georg Buer from Grave Declaration and ex-Antestor wrote “A Jester Arrayed in Burning Gold,” “Hæðen,” and “Let the Ravens Have My Eyes” from Holy Despair. We loved his work with Grave Declaration and Antestor, and he is a good friend, so we were really excited that he could work with us on the album.

  • By the way how has been the process of writing and recording of "Holy Despair and that differs from your previous" Omens "of 2011?           Omens was written during rehearsals while ATHDU was very active, so the songs were written before and after practicing for tours and overseas shows whenever we had time. Holy Despair was written when we had no full line up and were pretty much solely focused on writing the album. Both processes worked, but I feel like Holy Despair turned out better because we were more focused on it than with Omens. We are already working on the fourth release and we have a totally new approach, so I am excited to see how this new process works.

  • "Holy Despair can be considered mature album A Hill to Die Upon" How would you describe the sound of the album for someone who still has not heard?            Musically, it is blackened death metal. It’s fast, heavy, and dark. We tend to think that it is just black metal played by death metal players. We aren’t too concerned about being overly original. A lot of people spend a great deal of energy trying to be new, but they waste energy they could spend being good. We would rather put out quality art than subpar original art. We are convinced that originality will happen, but it is not our focus.

  • Enslaved, Nachtmystium my point of view are Don bands have influenced the sound of your last album, what are you to your main musical influences as are noticed in your music?            Enslaved was a huge influence on our last album, but I think I’ve only heard Nachtmystium once. There was actually a point where we felt like our album was turning out too much like Enslaved and we intentionally pushed against it.

  • What the lyrics to your songs are and why you consider it important to write about?             Religion is a common topic in black metal. We take a bit of a different approach than most black metal bands, but I typically write about religion, spirituality, linguistics, mythology, and occasionally personal experiences. As a Christian, I take a lot of different views on things in black metal. We aren’t trying to play Christian music like Vengeance Rising or Mortification, but our views still come out in the music.

  • Watain, Rush, Johnny Cash, Alice Cooper, etc. .., artists from different genres and in more or less like you, can we say that you are not listening to black all the time and on the other hand a certain disconnection is necessary? by the way, that you should review the latest album by Watain?            Yeah, we listen to a lot of different music that isn’t metal. Johnny Cash is my favorite singer of all time, and I listen to a lot of other country. Adam listens to a lot of indie pop, Nolan listens to a lot of folk, and Mike listens to tons of classical. The indie band mewithoutYou has had a huge influence on AHTDU, even though they aren’t heavy at all. I really like Watain’s The Wild Hunt. I haven’t listened to it as much as Sworn to the Dark or Lawless Darkness, but I think they managed to do a lot of interesting things while maintaining a really solid black metal release. “They Rode On” is a really exceptional track.

  • How do you see the American extreme scene? Does it feel part of the scene or a bit going for free?            I think the American extreme music scene is really strong right now. It is pretty varied with deathcore, hardcore, black metal, and death metal, but there is a lot of good music coming out right now. I’m not necessarily a fan of it all, but there is a lot of quality in it. On the other hand, there is a lot of repetition. A lot of bands sound exactly the same.             I know a lot of prominent European musicians have denounced the American scene, but I don’t think their accusations are really valid. Mostly their complaints boil down to “I don’t like it because it’s not like the European scene,” or are pointed at the plethora of deathcore bands. But we’re Americans and not Europeans, so I don’t think Americans have anything to worry about.

  • How were your beginnings in music, cds first first concert? Because you decided to be a musician? Still preserved today the same enthusiasm as when you started?             I don’t remember my first album, but I remember that my first concert was the pop band Newsboys. They put on a really killer show. I started playing drums at 11 and have loved it ever since. Currently, I’m trying to get session work and play with different artists so I can be playing all year long and not just when AHTDU is touring.

  • Who designed the album cover? Does it relate to the content of the album and why you decided the title of Holy Despair?             The album cover was drawn by Tyler Hays, and his father, Greg, did the layout. Despair, I believe, is a very healthy emotion during some seasons in life. The album deals a lot with this season, World War I, and the darker side of the positive spiritual experience. Despair was the main focus, and has been since Infinite Titanic Immortal. It is a painful thing, but necessary for understanding the universe and god.

  • How does the ability to edit the work through the seal Bombworks Records? Are you satisfied with the response from the public and media to the drive come from?     We’ve been really happy with Matt and what he does through Bombworks Records. We hired a media publicist for our release of Holy Despair which really increased the amount of reviews and sales. The more people that hear our music the better!

  • What future plans do you have for the band regarding upcoming releases, gigs etc?            AHTDU is already writing our next release, but we aren’t sure when that will surface. We are currently planning future tours and shows now, but nothing is set in stone. Keep your ears open for future news! We’ve got our eye on Mexico and South America…

  • Thank you very much for your time, talking to Black Metal Spirit. If you want to add something to the followers of "A Hill to Die Upon", now is the time. Were the questions I hope to your liking?     Thanks for your interest, support, and featuring us in your blog! Just keep an eye for tour updates. We might be coming to you sooner than you think.
Thanks to Michael (drums and vocals)
