LANTERN - ENTREVISTA

1. Lantern is born from the ashes of Cacodaemon. Why did you decide to leave Cacodaemon and create Lantern in 2007? How were the early Lantern?

After 10 years of musical apprenticing with Cacodaemon, the ranks started to loosen up just a bit too much, so to say. The consensus, the focus and the interest of the group started to wane, and I – as the solemn dictator, hah – then decided to put the band to rest and start from a clean slate. So Cacodaemon died a natural death, one could state. And not too long after that, I and our vocalist Necrophilos breathed life into a new entity called Lantern, and the first songs and the first demo were scraped together in 2007 in a rather improvisational manner. The way the early creations of Lantern were put together was very chaotic, but eventually things shaped up into what they are now.

2. You have just published "Below" How was the writing process for this album? How will the arregláis to work in the studio when recording the different parts?

The songs that ended up on "Below" were written between 2007 and 2011… basically from our birth to the beginning of the album drum recordings. Some songs took four years to be completed, while some were finished in one day (although a riff or two might have been lingering around for some time). Eventually all the material that would create this extremely uniform piece of deathly metal fell into place like the pieces of a puzzle, and we started to record the drums. However, as to our always at least partially improvisational style of working, the songs were not fully complete when we entered the studio, but came perfected while they were being recorded. This pretty much sums up how the rest of the recordings went, as well: each song was chiseled to better precision one instrument / vocal track at a time.

3. How has the band's sound evolved over the years? Do you think your music although there are still some residue of old school death, whenever it is true that increases the weight of black metal?

As said, the first demo was very loosely built, and we didn’t know what to expect when we entered the studio. Still, “Virgin Taste…” ended up showing many of the qualities that persist in Lantern’s music today: a mix of death and black metal with a touch of doom and even heavy metal… something pretty hard to describe! While crafting "Subterranean Effulgence", our sound began to evolve toward something more stable and uniform… and when we got to work on "Below", I think the last style-wise piece ultimately clicked in place.
So although the keyword with Lantern is death metal, the black metal element (alongside the slightly less obvious doom, heavy etc. ones) has always been there, very strongly even. “Manifesting Shambolic Aura”, for example, is the first song ever written for Lantern, thus representing our essence more than well. However, I feel like the borders of death, black and whatever metal are becoming even harder to recognize in Lantern’s music, at least when judging the new songs I have at hand right now.

4. Convulse, Abhorrence, Entombed, in my point of view are bands with certain similarities to Lantern. What are your main influences? What do you think about the trajectory of the aforementioned bands?

Stuff like Possessed, old Morbid Angel and Therion, Necrosanct, Samael, Mercyful Fate, Dark Throne and so forth could be listed here. From Finnish bands, Demigod, Beherit, Belial and Impaled Nazarene affected my works especially back in the day. Some of the old progressive rock wave has also inspired me regarding how music can be written and especially how certain boundaries can be broken. Nowadays it’s harder for me to pinpoint where my influences come from, as the things that inspire me currently come from inside of me and not that much from the outside.
As for the trajectory of Convulse, Abhorrence and Entombed, I think all of them have aged relatively well. They’re not as deadly as they were in the early 90’s, but I think no one should expect one to keep their most primal edge after, what, 20 years.

5. Regarding the death scene of Finland, what can you tell us about the scene?

The death metal scene is very functional with lots of good bands and especially lots of good people in it. A grand hail to all the great personnel – you know who you are! Of course the scene isn’t restricted to just death metal; black, doom, heavy and thrash metal maniacs blend in the same way.

6. The theme of the lyrics revolve around The lyrical theme journeys unto death and undeath, mysticism of existence and afterlife - and all that is hidden in between. Could you elaborate a bit on these concepts, which mean to you?

The near-death experience I had in 2000 changed my values and my perspectives towards death, dying and life itself. So since then my lyrics have drawn inspiration from what I saw and felt, what I was left contemplating and so forth. It’s sketching an abstract inner landscape on canvas, trying to describe my visions about death and the planes of existence.
Some of my other texts affiliate with plain horror topics and unspeakable visions, but sometimes contain a “side rail” of sorts; an alternative meaning concealed within the obvious context.

7. What reasons led you to be a musician in the first place? Are they still valid today? What is your opinion today at Finnish extreme scene?

I’ve been playing an instrument since, hmm, 1993 or so, guitar from 1995, so I could say it just started from a kid’s hobby of learning how to play something. And when my personal musical preferences began to develop together with playing skills, I started to create music somewhat similar to my liking, which was metal at the time. And here we are… still composing metal music.

 8. Who designed the cover of Below? How does the cover to the music or the band?

Alexander “Bad News” Brown from New Zealand designed the cover, the same guy who nailed the “Subterranean Effulgence” EP art. The front cover art compiles much of the album’s lyrical (especially from “Rites of Descent” and “Entrenching Presences”) and thematic content, while the booklet has some references to the way the whole piece progresses. It’s a complex piece, and like with everything else, I endorse the listener / viewer to plunge into the details and find further meanings from it.

9. How do these first concerts being presented "Below"? Is it very difficult to get musicians for concerts?

If you mean our album release shows in May 2013, they were a blast. Our current set-list contains quite a bit of “Below” material beside a few older songs, and I think they work well when played live.
In Finland, the whole live show scene is relatively advanced with great organizers like KRK around. There’s no problem getting gigs, if you just play good music and work with a humble attitude. Still, outside the biggest Finnish cities, venues that are both decent and supporting metal events seem to be growing less, which is a problem. But still: where there’s a will, there’s a way.

10. "Below" is published through Dark Descent Records, Death orientation States. How did this collaboration? Do you feel comfortable in Dark Descent Records? To be continued in the future publishing your material through it?

Collaborating with Dark Descent Records has been a satisfactory experience. Imagine working with a good pal, who just does his part with utter professionalism and passion… not only for music, or metal music, but YOUR music. I could not wish for nor demand any better conditions than what Dark Descent Records have offered. And what comes to the future, we have not discussed anything yet. But hypothetically, I can’t see why we wouldn’t collaborate with Dark Descent in the future, if we only manage to keep composing worthy material.

11. What next steps will Lantern, in terms of new releases, concerts, etc ...?

We’re currently composing new songs and trying to figure out fitting concepts for them. So release-wise we’re merely planning new schemes. Gigs are more than welcome at the moment, and we actually have a couple of more Finnish shows agreed on but not officially announced for autumn 2013. Playing abroad is the next big step we’d like to take some time in the (near) future.

12. Thank you very much for your time, if you want to add something for people who like Lantern, this is the place, thanks. I hope the questions are to your liking.

Thanks for the interview and your interest in Lantern!

TROLLGASM - ENTREVISTA

Good morning, that's everything for Dubbo, thank you very much for agreeing to answer these questions

1. How were the early Trollgasm? Preceding Brutal death band, and Gridcore, because forming a band of viking, folk and black as Trollgasm? What do you offer Trollgasm with respect to the other bands to which you belong?

Initially Trollgasm was going to be a one man project recording an off demo of grindcore with some slight folk elements and Norse themed lyrics. Kind of like if Haemorrhage wrote folk metal like Eluveitie's Ven EP. I spent a fair amount of time trying to make it work but it ended up sounded like a poor regurgitate knock off with awful guitar pro folk instruments. I was about to give up on it until I heard Isengard and Storm and decided to make it a more simple black Viking type thing instead.
It wasn't until Nathan (drums) came to me with the start of songs like Heineken and Ride that we decided to do something with it. By that time people in Dubbo were getting sick of hearing deathgrind so it seemed like we could go from one extreme to the other.

2. How was the recording process of this EP "The Northern Winds"? Does it very difficult to work in the studio have to incorporate folk instrumentation such?

The folk instrumentation was the easy part. Money to record however, is what delayed the release two years. We did technically finish it at one point but we weren't too pleased with how robotic the violins sounded. So we enlisted the help of Grace to violins on the EP which made it sound 100 times better.

3. What are your sources of inspiration when composing and your main influences?

We have a lot of different inspirations both musically and lyrically and it shows in which ever of us writes most of the track. Nathan is really into bands like Korpiklaani and Turisas so a lot of his songs are either really party or super epic (Heed the Battle Call), whereas I'm more into really Viking black metal like Manegarm. Dani and Michael want to add as much death metal as possible.
Our lyrics started off the usual Scandinavian mythology but of late it's headed more towards partying, J.R.R. Tolkien and even video games (Skyrim, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, even Legend of Zelda). So it'd a whole mass of things that form our sound despite us not really trying to do anything too abstract on the EP

4. Proceeding in a relatively small town like Dubbo (Australia), seems to have a scene quality extreme bands, what can you tell us about the extreme scene Dubbo?

A few years ago there was death and grind, even melodic death but not really much of a live scene. It was around 2010 when modern hardcore bands started taking over leaving really only one deathgrind band called Zombie Lolocaust (has featured every member of Trollgasm at one time or another). It's gotten a little more varied since then but the extreme music is still very small. We're actually getting another wave of thrash bands.

5. How were your beginnings in music? What is the first CD from your collection and which you are most proud to own?

My father was always playing the oldies like Cream, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin so it started very young, my brother Dani (bass) started getting into more modern metal like Slipknot, Rob Zombie, Spineshank etc so it just kind of grew. We both got into extreme metal like Cannibal Corpse and Morbid Angel not long after.

The first album I was really proud to own was probably Cannibal Corpse's butchered at birth, needless to say my mother wasn't too impressed haha.

6. How certain collaborations emerged that appear on the album in terms of vocals and guitars, Jesse McGunnigle I mean and Jorge Dominguez and Brandon Capriotti guitars to vocals?

In the case of Jesse and Jorge I've been a fan of their band Yonder Realm for quite a while and have spoken to them online for about as long as I've known of their band. During the process of recording we decided to do a lot of it at my home studio but ran into some problems getting acoustic guitar to sound any good so I hit up Jesse about it and he was more than happy. There was always planned to be a cool solo in Forest Warriors but to be honest, my soloing still sounds suite messy so I asked Jorge to lay one down. I met Brendon when his band Claim the Throne supported Finntroll in Aus and added him to facebook, sent him our demo tape to which he sent back massive package with CDs and shirts. We had just recorded Humppa Humppa and thought it had a slight resemblance to Claim the Throne's Triumph and Betond version of Two Pints of Honey and A Barrel Full of Beer and in true Aussie fashion was just so casual about saying yes. It’s a good feeling when so many musicians are more than happy to help with getting the sound we want.

7. Do you consider self-publishing as the only way to publicize your work?

Being from Dubbo we don't really have much in the way of publishing. Most people see Dubbo as a dirty hick town of dirt and tumble weed but it's not quite that bad and up until the last 6 months of so we weren't really gigging outside of Dubbo. So self-publishing seemed like the most efficient way to go. We have had a lot of support from Melbourne based label Aurora Australis Records though. So maybe he can publish future releases? Who knows?

8. How does the cover of the EP with music, lyrics and concept of the album? What you want to reflect the cover, who is the design?

The front cover is actually meant to be the back cover, Joel Patton moved state and lost a lot of his work and the front cover we did have had an orange tone through it which in the end we decided we didn’t like. The cover we used does somewhat get the message across of haunting, beautiful, atmospheres that you hear in Heed the Battle Call and the title track but not as much as the original before the orange was added. So we snatched a piece of art for the back covet from Onetwotree designs (with permission of course)

9. What are your plans for the band regarding upcoming releases, concerts, etc. ..?

We've got two metal fests booked for August and September as well as a support for Claim the Throne at some point around then so we're thinking of doing an 8 show tour of sorts and adding a whole bunch of rural gigs.

As for new releases we're working on two. A 5 track acoustic EP and a full length. We're taking a slightly different approach to these two releases. The full length we're hoping to have a more sinister atmosphere but more complex song writing on the guitars part. Whereas the acoustic EP we're getting a lot of ideas from bands like Opeth, Agalloch and even medieval bard music. Very different to the Northern Winds which was basically us trying to find a sound

10. Thank you very much for your time, if you want to add something for people who like Trollgasm, this is the place, thanks. I hope the questions are to your liking.

Thanks for showing interest in us, we're still a very small band but the response to this EP has been phenomenal. Can't have asked for anything more. Thanks to everyone that has gotten a copy and has shown we support. Hopefully you will hear more from us very soon!
Oh, and sorry if I rambled on a bit

ABRAHEL - ENTREVISTA

Pues no…

Salud y Metal Negro, Hermanos.

1. Rites of Descent 05:46
"From the vaults and through the rites
To descend into the light"

A procession drags forth with the strength of six
Escorting a coffin down to its abyss
By evenfall, the sound that silence yields
An autumnal necrology faintly whispered by funereal draughts

Blessings, priests and prayers
Nothing more than just pleasantries for living
Beyond death we thrust, onwards...

...To the only lord, the pantheon face
Whose lust and grace only dead may portray

Rise... from the vestibules of nothingness
Rise... past where mortal eyes see only death
For when the blood and body sleep...
Dawns the hour of the true awakening
When the astral urge defeats the oaken embrace of the coffin

"From the vaults and through the rites
To descend into the light of which is unborn
Yet which shall be born again"

Rise to descend...
Through absence of time and space
Where darkness prevails - world without end

Rise to descend from the dominance of kings
The lies of your heart and the power of your limbs
Rites of descent... Rise, rise...

As your blood dreams
Oh, the luminance revealed by the blackest deep

"All I own, all my soul
To the only lord; my path winds below"
2. Revenant 05:34
"A question unto thee: what suffering made you linger?"
You show me Italy in late sixties, winter's time
Catholic belief still struck so deep in your fingers
The priests flogged and conveyed against their thighs, moaning...

Should you attempt to shun and avoid the light, sadism stormed in
Abused, and dry you bled, your dreams in death stayed spawning
Wrath upon the Lord: the son and ghost your lust sees bleed

"Befoul the sabbath of light!"

Force them brightness the way you were forced
Force them the visions you suffered in death; the timelessness since
Expel their god out from your flesh for demons to witness how
The revenant prays at his church

Sleepless one... Your corpse will house your wandering spirit
When the moon... Is waning gibbous, your remnant's they shall dig:
Sunday dawn... A foul wind will clatter
The bones lay hidden within the church soil

Evil spirits turned away for centuries shall again be embraced
To host the cellars, crawl the estates
Join the risen for a sabbath of underworld

"Something's rotten..." the parish may say:
A morbid stench... The draught from cellars swiftly conveys
'cross the halls... The light in the tunnel of darkness shall shed
To divulge the dead spread out at sacrament

...Befoul the sabbath

Falls a sea of light
This space and time
Absorbed by the laws of the other side;
Commence the christenings to the coven of revenant

The wafer and the wine, feces divine, poison healing
Reversed christenings - atone the sins by dying
Confessions of the flesh, intestines and fresh blood
Take one last goodly grasp through the icon glass –
The light will take you to god

Sheep of god... The light will take you
Sheep of god... The light will take you
Where you're dreaming yet your soul's awake
For endless nightmares to feed
Yearning, grief, hatred, true inner darkness
Shall be yours eternally

May your flesh, mind and soul linger for eternities

"Befoul the sabbath of light!"
3. Entrenching Presences 07:38
Unholy deeds performed in secrecy Lay haunting the eve like the reminiscence of the late And when the clouds meander and take forms unlike seen Something stirs in the ether, a presence... Entrenching Soar... Through the abyss, whence the concealed wisdoms are welling forth Like souls dwelt in malice lay hungry for my stifled thoughts The visions in the shadows, in the darkest recess of the mind Which crawl yet to shatter what I once defined as my one true life Behold... Apparitions, unimaginable dreams of space From a closed division of my psyche something escalates: Revelations... From beyond; reborn in gnosis of starlight And the more I know, the more my bonds to this world dissolve The order in which stars align, clarified Archaic times and nameless rites I have come to remember; Taken by a presence old and repugnant Torn out from where my roots lie And my mind altered by alchemy beyond all that is human: "Solve et coagula!" Dissolve to evolve Feels like I am crawling with serpent-forms, feelers, tongues; This hour one with forgotten ages Entrenched in abhorrence you dare not to believe Impregnated by a seed of higher planes Presences spawning in my soul: Now I have seen all in a larger scale Larger than my mind could hold How deep in depths must I linger on? How far in merciless, cold space Until man I am no more? When the dawn breaks, and the hoar falls to dew And with the dew leaves my presence, into death's silver hue How the clouds meander and take forms unlike seen The last pale remainder of what ever lingers of me The order in which stars align...
4. Manifesting Shambolic Aura 04:30
have lain growing my force for one last search
Come one with inner demons, given death birth
And my back I shan’t turn
Thrust beyond and make return
Manifesting his aura…

Gliding this cortex I see the dream I choose
My body a mere vessel carrying you through

A clear foresight of a plague and a cure
A glimpse of true light reflecting from the impure

Ave Satan, my lantern in the dark
Through this offer, may our views become one

The unlight meditation shall bear its fruit
Preparing soulless coffins to unfold their truth
Weltering in putrefaction the faceless come born
Devouring nightmares bred deep into your souls

A glimpse of true light, the knives of my mind
With violence I strike, standing tall in your blood

Hear the bells of your doom declare my tide
For an hour of bright calamity
This is the wake of the black seed
The foul incubation complete

The release of the fume of the coffins
The release of the faceless of the deep
The gods which dwell within my church
The chaos in order emerged
Ave Satan...
5. Demons in My Room 04:41
 I am not citing my dreams, and I am not accustomed to lie;
These visions of past nights in flesh epitomised
In flesh yet not mortal, divine yet beyond grace;
Oh, these visions of horror shan't be bestowed a face

If only I could make return from where my journals trespassed the line
Where shadows turn tangible, and might just slip inside
The most desolate of prophecies, spewn out from my own quill
Now this sheet a crossing where my poor mind and the unseen ones would meet

Spectres of humanity, disincarnate...
Remnants of my sanity scattered on membranous wings

"From behind the curtain something has indeed entered
My nightmares mixed into my wake like some fluid
In my room, something constantly watching, unseen but certain
I can tell you, from the chill that went down my spine
Something's there...

Should I be able to break free from these chambers
I could never break free of these demonic memoirs
And eventually my soul, my spirit and my love
They would eviscerate"

I am not citing my dreams, I can only spare you the truth
And advise you avoid me and the demons in my room

7. From the Ruins 09:20
  Hark!
The storms' aeon-old chant in countless tongues summoned...
Long... Have the vials lain dusting in thirst
The blood they crave must flow...

In this foul service in which to chant and kiss the goat

For tonight the moon shall be in place, the vials brimmed with crimson fluids
For tonight belongs to witches and incantations from the ruins

By the meadow, oldest stones give radiance
From a circle of black candles' gleam
And in the circle swells a sea of voices
Deathlike waves rising in consecration

...For the ones who roam endlessly
...For virgin blood to run free

The glimmer of a curved dagger in for a kill
Flashing at the virgin's face - in her eyes, death

Hear... The liturgies now said
Sealed and sanctified with death

The chant becomes wilder, in heat they revel
Ecstasy and lust burning for a spell
The dagger raised skyward for a frenzied strike
The maiden fair and pure stabbed like lowly swine
Bleeding dry into vials

Disemboweled... A death devout...

And by dawn all marks lay gone
But the winds bear in mind their songs

In the gleam of fire that from the ruins stems forth
In the otherworldly colour of their songs
From the ruins blood has flown;
Their offal lay carried on

...In regions beyond life
Beyond death and mortal grasp
Beyond future and past

"From the ruins we call to thee!"

THOU ART LORD - ENTREVISTA

1. Thou Art Lord was born around 1993 and at that original lineup included members of Rotting Christ and Necromantia. What led you to join the group? Why musicians bands were part of "relative" success embarked on this new project?

-Thou Art Lord was always a project band where we played the music we love to listen to. We do not focus on artistic creativity. We simply unleash the dark of our souls and we channel our passion for black/death metal through it. Of course the success of our main band helped to spread the name but in the end it is the music who gained the fans!

2. What can you tell us these twenty year career in the aspect of evolution of the band's music? What do you remember as the best moments as a band, and instead what were the worst?

-There were never worst times in Thou Art Lord...well maybe some mistakes musically.....but still no bad times. The best time was when we got in our hands our first 7" Ep "Diabolou archaes legeones". It was really exciting to get our first release on vinyl!

3. The group has suffered a couple of "stoppages", one in 1996 after the publication of "Apollyon" and the other in 2005 after editing "Orgia Daemonicum" you meant? Both times terminate Thou Art Lord? Why are these stoppages and that I pushed the group back on track?

-We are always a project band. We may release another album next year or in 5 years from now. When we find time and we are in the mood , we regroup and unleash dark music!

4. How was the writing process of this "The Regal Press of Lucifer"? How do you work in the studio? How has been the integration of the new members, who have provided the set of the band's music?

-El (guitar) did most of the works musically under theu guidance and intuition of me and Necromayhem. He was working the demos at home and we were exchanging ideas and opinions all the way. In the studio it was pretty quick because we already knew what we want. Gothmog is an old time member and our new drummer did an excellent job

5. What reason ye in your early to want to be musicians? Are they still today these reasons still valid? What are your sources d inspiration?

-The music and the lyrics source from the darkest corners of our inner selves and they are expressions of art, violence and darkness. We like a lot kinds of music but we live for metal!

6. What can you tell us of the original Hellenic black metal scene as members of Necromantia and Rotting Christ? What memories do you have of that time? How has the scene? What you think of the black metal scene, not only at Greece but as a whole today?

-Back in the 90's things were more true and honest. Bands were trying to create their own sound and identity. everybody knew each other and we were doing our best to promote the scene. Nowadays few bands create original music anymore....

7. What kind of musical equipment and tools you use in the studio, and live them?

-Standard and average things . we do not care about technical perfection and sound excellence. as long as the real feeling is there everything is good!

8. Five fundamental cds in black metal.

-First 3 BATHORY albums, first 2 MERCYFUL FATE albums, first 3 CELTIC FROST, first 3 VENOM. That is all

9. Let's talk about Nuclear War Now! Productions, How did the contract? Are you happy with the treatment received and will extend this relationship story? Do you plan at some point re-edit your first editions, Ep, demo and Split?

-So far we are ok. We have are differences (mainly artistic) but we get along well. The contract was also pretty ok, nothing spectacular but it covered all the basics. NWN has a very good underground established name that is why we chose to work with them.

10. Who is designing the album cover? How does the letters and topics you treat them?

-The stunning artwork is of mr Manuel Tinnemans. I gave him the idea of a royal figure of Lucifer and he came up with this masterpiece. This Lucifer is closer to my idea of him: a mix of Satan, Zeus and Odin. Plus the cover has an old school SLAYER feeling....

11. Are you satisfied by the impact it has had this "The Regal Press of Lucifer", both media and public acceptance? What next steps can expect your followers about concerts, new material, etc. ...?

-So far people love the new album. It is powerful and old school without sounding cheesy...a small Greek tour will happen in autumn and maybe a couple of shows in Europe

12. Thank you very much for your time, if you want to add something for people who like Thou Art Lord, this is the place, thanks. I hope the questions are to your liking.

-Listen to the regal pulse of Lucifer pounding within you!

DIRTY (2013)
