A FOREST (2020)

Diría sin miedo a equivocarme que la época dorada de Behemoth es historia y con esta época dorada me refiero a la que abarca su sonido más característico black/death, desde sus cuatro primeras demos, hasta finales de la década del dos mil. Con esto no estoy criticando que las bandas no deban evolucionar y ofrecer un sonido más acorde con lo que les apetece hacer en ese momento, habría eso si que discutir si deberían seguir bajo la misma denominación o buscarse otro que acogiera estos nuevos sonidos y estilos que poco o nada tienen que ver con lo origines de la banda. Dicho esto no merece mucho la pena perder el tiempo con los cuatro temas del EP, los dos primeros son una versión de estudio y en directo del tema "A Forest" de The Cure en el cual sólo cabría salvar de la versión en directo algún buen momento de batería que recuerda al sonido de hace una década de la banda y tragarse unas voces lamentables, sobre todo en la versión en directo. Los otros dos temas son descartes de su álbum "I Loved You At Your Darkest". El primero de ellos "Shadows ov Ea Cast upon Golgotha" si que se muestra acorde con un sonido black/death, pero acaba por parecer incompleto y algo falto de vida. Esto último sucede con "Evoe", que cierra el EP del manera patética. (6).

358 (2019)

La segunda mitad del pasado año fue una época frenética para los galosVaccum Tehiru con la edición en un corto período de tiempo de tres álbumes, siendo el primero de ellos este "358". Neurologías aparte en relación con el tñirulo del álbum y su asignación a la buena suerte, al mismo tiempo que el uso de una pintura de Goya de corte oscuro y siniestro para ilustrar el álbum, tenemos que hablar de un álbum de black/death metal realmente oscuro y denso con influencias de los años noventa y con un sonido que por proximidad geográfica tiene bastante que ver con la escuela suiza. Un álbum que comienza con la siniestra intro "Shadows" que sirve como preámbulo a un desgarrador álbum de death/black en donde ambos estilos se solapan, aunque el peso del black acaba por ser predominante. El álbum se nutre de pesados riffs, rápidos y muy fríos, aunque en algunas partes también se ofrecen descarados cambios de ritmo hacia terrenos más lentos que permiten ofrecer unos riffs con más influencias melódicas, que sin embargo no pierden un ápice de su densidad y contundencia, complementados a la perfección por un a batería de ritmo alto, pero que también sabe amoldarse perfectamente a estos cambios de ritmo, que sin ser constantes si que enfatizan un tono más siniestro, que la mismo tiempo son necesarios en medio del alto ritmo que mantienen las composiciones, sonando como una máquina perfectamente engrasada, sin apenas fisuras. No le van a la zaga las voces, habrá quien las encuentre planas, pero sin embargo el echo de dejarse influenciar por los sonidos death/black con un tono cercano al underground hacen que se acoplen perfectamente al plano musical. Si a todo ello unimos algunos pasajes ambientales y también algunos arreglos de teclado en un segundo plano, sin mucho protagonismo pero si capaces tanto de ofrecer un tono melódico como de aportar al sonido un toque más retro tenemos, en definitiva, un álbum con muchas influencias clásicas pero que se amolda a los tiempos actuales. A DESOLATE PLACE (2019)

En activo desde 1999, pero sin llegar nunca a editar material, el trío de Arkansas presenta un extenso primer álbum un tanto difuso en cuanto a estilos. Cabe decir que las composiciones se encuadran perfectamente en la ambigüedad de sonido death, doom o gótico, con las fronteras poco definidas en la línea de una vertiente entre lo experimental y lo innovador de lo que estaba sucediendo en el metal a finales de los noventa. Este "A Desolate Place" suena furioso y rabioso, denso y compacto, buena parte de ello se lo debemos a las influencias death de su música, con un linea oscura y profunda en cada riffs. Sin embargo Ba'alzamon logra también emplear elementos en este álbum que recuerdan al black melódico, con un tono épico y que sin llegar a plasmarse del todo también esconde un toque entre lo gótico y lo sinfónico, sin que llegue a cuajar. Las voces se muestran potentes, moviéndose sin problemas entre la profundidad y guturalidad del death, sabiendo también ofrecer cierta agresividad propia del black. Los temas son extensos y dejan espacio para que la música se abra a terrenos más experimentales, con pasajes atmosféricos, algunas influencias de sonidos clásicos y elementos que recuerdan a recursos electrónicos, heavy o rock e incluso toques de teclado. Todo ello hace que el álbum se difumine en demasiados estilos sin concretar demasiado, dejando al oyente un tanto descolocado como ocurre con la inclusión de la versión de "Self Control" de Raf que cierra el álbum. MALUM ABSOLUTUM (2020)

Quinto trabajo para la veterana banda brasileña, casi que treinta años a sus espaldas, conservando como único miembro de la formación original al bajista Agathodemon. Un álbum que sigue marcado por las influencias y sonido del black escandinavo de los noventa, presente en las composiciones de Murder Rape desde sus inicios, el álbum incluye una versión del tema "The Return of Darkness and Evil" de Bsthory en su tramo final para dejar todavía más remarcadas estas influencias. Agathodemon se las ha arreglado para mantener a Murder Rape vivo a lo largo de estos años, reuniendo una formación de garantías que permite mantener la llama viva del espíritu black de los noventa, más allá de indumentaria, temática y composiciones. Los diez temas que contiene este "Malum Absolutum" son densos y oscuros, en donde riffs de guitarra se suceden para crear un muro de sonido completado por el bajo de Agathodemon  que le da mayor profundidad al sonido, tal vez la ausencia de solos y un mayor peso de capas de riffs sea lo más destacado de este apartado. La batería se muestra bastante dinámica, acompañando en los pasajes más lentos pero también capaz de cambiar el ritmo hacia terrenos más violento echando mano de blast beast cuando es necesaria. Las voces parecen ancladas en el pasado, ofreciendo tanto rabia y profundidad, como oscuridad en un estilo que se mueve entre la oscuridad y la agresividad. A todo ello se le añaden unos sutiles arreglos de teclado en segundo plano, que no están presentes el todo pero que añaden una atmósfera de podredumbre al conjunto. Un nuevo trabajo para los brasileños, que parecen anclados en el tiempo, dentro de un sonido black de clara influencia noruega, pero que han sabido moldear a su gusto. (8,3).

EVOCATION OF DEATH (2020)

Primer Ep para Occasum detrás del cual podemos encontrar a Andreas Nilsson de Naglfar: Un primer Ep que consta de tres temas que nos ofrecen un black/death bastante potente y violento. La veterania de Andreas Nilsson es un grado y el buen hacer en Naglfar se deja sentir en todo lo que rodea el sonido de este EP que por un lado conserva unas dosis de underground en toda la propuesta, al mismo tiempo que las influencias melódicas del sonido de Naglfar intentan cobra protagonismo en segundo plano. Lo cierto es que el sonido de Occasum se nutre del death suceo más pastoso, lodoso y putrefacto, siendo el principal componente de este "Evocation of Death", aunque no podemos pasar por alto las letras y también la atmósfera de estos tres temas que los acercan de forma acertada al black. Todo ello mezclado con unas voces cavernosas, bajo y guitarra densos y contundentes, con afilados riffs pero manteniendo una velocidad comedida, al tiempo que la batería aporta una dosis de oscuridad y brutalidad que combina perfectamente con las voces y dota al sonido de un componente black/death. Resulta siempre interesante comprobar que músicos asentados en proyectos de mayor raingambre encuentran la forma de dar rienda suelta a otras influencias y estilos que no encajan e todo con su banda de procedencia. Devastadora primera entrega para esta banda italiana que después de la escucha de este trabajo uno solo puede preguntarse primero, sus antecedentes y segundo a donde les llevará sus próximos pasos ya que estamos sin lugar a dudas ante uno de los lanzamientos destacados del años en cuanto a nueva bandas. Calvana sorprende por un muro de sonido directo y visceral en donde el oyente se sumerge en una espiral de odio y putrefacción. Baterías agresivas, rápidas y directas se suceden en medio de los arrebatos de violentos riffs de guitarra y bajo, creando todo ello un pastiche de sonidos violentos y brutales, sin que ningún instrumentos solape a otro, lo cual es de agradecer por la oportunidad de disfrutar de la violencia en todo su esplendor.  Las voces de MºM se sumergen en una espiral de violencia y contundencia centrándose en ofrecer un estilo que se mueve por terrenos del black death, aportando al conjunto un toque de oscuridad y profundidad para sumergirlo en una espiral siniestra sin retorno. Estamos ante un álbum extenso, más de cincuenta y cinco minutos dan buena cuenta de ello, permitiendo con ello cierto arreglos que nos meten en situación, a base de algunos arreglos más limpios o de bajadas de velocidad que permiten a los temas fluir de forma más compensado entre estos interludios y la maraña densa y oscura del producto final. Calvana se da a conocer con un primer trabajo en donde conviven el black/death infecto y putrefacto sin que el oyente encuentra redención más allá de algunas estructuras más accesibles que complementan las composiciones. FOSTER (2019)

Los estadounidenses han dejado trascurrir un periodo relativamente amplio entre sus dos álbumes, sin embargo este tiempo ha sido bien empleado en engrasar su maquinaria y ofrecer un intenso nuevo trabajo de seis temas que no llega a la media hora de duración. La propuesta de Attic se muestra agresiva y violenta, atrapando al oyente en una interesante mezcla de death y black progresivo. El sonido es contundente, pero no destaca por su rapidez, los temas van medrando poco a poco, desde unos inicios más calmados, de guitarras limpias con un toque melódico para ir dar paso a una explosión de sonido que sabe adentrarse por desarrollos que sin llegar a ser complejos si se muestran variados, capaces de retorcer el tema y llevarlos a transitar por estilo como el death o el black progresivo que al mismo tiempo contiene influencias punk. La presencia del sonido del bajo ha sido fundamental para sacar adelante el sonido de "Fostet", su presencia dota de cuerpo y contundencia los temas, logrando un dialogo entre bajo y guitarra casi que perfecto, en una línea que mezcla contundencia y melodía a partes iguales. Las voces mantienen un termino medio, son capaces de ofrecer cierta brutalidad death pero también se involucran en ofrecer un tono más rasgado y rabioso que las sitúa entre el black y el punk. El apartado de la batería no duda en mantenerse firme en cuanto a contundencia pero el ritmo más lento de la misma dota de un cierto groove a este álbum. Un álbum que acaba por resultar intenso, incluso emotivo, valiéndose para ello de estructuras que van desde unas partes más lentas y cercanas en contraposición a otras más directas y agresivas que siempre esconcen alguna sorpresa en forma de giro inesperado.
